I had GD with my pregnancy last year (ended up on insulin).
BSL's following the birth were fine. Never got referred for a follow-up GTT (oops )... but just did a BSL 2 hours post my evening meal and got a 10. Does this mean I may well have impaired glucose tolerance, or more likely to be diabetes???
Could be either (I currently have the same problem and I was also a naughty girl ) Go and see your GP for a blood test.
It also depends on your weight as well. I have gained 5kg in the past 3 months (no idea how ) and that can be a significant reason for the elevation of BSL's
thanks for the reply. I've managed to lose about 5-6kg (i'm a few kilos off a healthy BMI now), but lost most of that a couple of months ago, have been losing maybe 100-200g per week recently. So I don't think that explains it
I'd definitely see your GP. I have type 2 diabetes, which was tablet controlled before pregnancy and then went on to 4 needles (yuck) during gestation - funnily enough, having the baby seemed to re-set my body and I am back to no tablets or needles now. Your GP might just recommend another GTT to be sure. My diabetes specialist has be testing before meals now ... but during pregnancy it was 2 hrs after meals and before bed. A reading of 10 is fairly high, but nothing to be too worried about. The GTT should tell you more, and the fact that you have been losing weight is great!
oh good luck! I really hope you get good results back.
Well i've booked an appt with the doc. My BSL this morning (after only a 8 hour fast) was 6.3, which also seems a little higher than it should be. I've only got 4 test strips left, so I'm gonna have to face the music I think
YAAAAAAAY! GP did my fasting glucose and my HbA1c (which picks up on glucose levels over the last few months) and they're both absolutely a-ok fine-diddly-fine! (and it turned out my GP clinic had never been notified that i'd had GD!). The first GP I saw (who ordered the tests) was otherwise crap and didn't say ANYTHING useful (nothing about prevention, eating, future risk or anything!!!), so I went back to a diff doc and queried why I didn't have to do the 2hr GTT. 2nd doc was great, and I've been referred to a dietician to help me with eating low GI/preventative stuff (as I have another dietary condition and never got referred to a dietician even when I was preggers). My doc says I might be erring towards the side of impaired glucose tolerance, but even if I develop that (or am developing that) that I have to do for that is eat low GI, lose weight & exercise... which I'm doing anyway.
So i'm soooo relieved and we've both (me & doc) agreed that I'll just monitor my BSL's myself just occasionally to keep an eye on them (given upcoming plans to TTC later this year), rather than trotting off to do the 2 hr GTT. AND she thought I'd done super well to lose 6kg. YAY!
Michelle71 - how did you go? I hope you got good news too.
Yep - absolutely perfect I think my machine needs recalibrating but HbA1C is perfect and so is the random glucose. Just need to have the GTT I had previously avoided though
oh that's fabulous news Michelle! I'm so pleased for you. Shame on the GTT, my GP didn't think I needed to do it now, but I guess that's partly cos my machine seems to be working ok. Just got more testing strips so I can just keep an eye on things. All the best with the GTT
