Lightbulb Free School Holiday idea - MELB -

    Hi,

Just thought i would share this with everyone.
Took DSS and DD to Fed square this week.
apart from the usual free things do do around the city, we headed to ACMI (located within Fed Sq, left hand side, towards the back if you are standing with your back to Flinders street station)
from 12-4 they have a drop in where kids (probably aged 5 up) can make clay puppets and then have them animated.
It was great and DSS (who is 11) loved it. Unfortunatly you dont get to keep your animation, but the clay is free and you can take your model home. You can make more than one model and could easily spend hours in there if your kids enjoyed it.

we then went to the NGV and walked towards the back garden, the big hall out the back (dnt know what its called) has an awesome stained glass ceiling and we lay on the floor and looked at that for a while, then went out to the garden area... there is a cool climbing frame thing in the back left of the gardens and the scupluters can be climbed on (well they dont say dont climb!!!) more free fun stuff!!!

For anyone looking for something to do, the whole day cost us a train ticket - we ate our packed lunch in fed square and laughed at the birds.

    Great day out

Anyone else got free ideas they want to post for others to experience ???

if you have a health care care or pension card you can get into the museum for free- otherwise its a small charge
but be warned- pomeii is on at the moment and the lines are long, but if you dont have to pay, you can get in quick!

The fire station museum is also a good one and they do free displays one day a week. Kids get to see the fire hoses etc in use and they can climb all over the fire trucks afterwards and try on the fireys jackets etc. Its located just off victoria pde!

Fitzroy gardens and the fairy garden, botanical gardens are suppose to be ace as well

there are markets at southbank on a sunday and they are good as well

go have a look around at docklands- sometimes free things there as well
there is a website that has a list of whats on in the city- its called that's melbourne

The lolly shop at Southbank is a great place to go as it's fun watching them make the lollies.
Not sure if it's still there but from no 3? dock there was a free ferry. It is a restaurant one but we only had coffee and a great trip on the Yarra.
The city tram or bus is also free to get around. Vic Market is a great place to walk around and you are near gardens.
