Diarrhoea and Breastfeeding a new baby

So I have developed a major case of the runs
    - TMI WARNING - read on at your peril!

I have been 3 times in the last hour and it is now basically liquid and a gross yellow/green colour - it also burns I have the associated cramping in my lower abdo etc.

How do I keep my baby safe? I am washing hands etc - but am I ok to keep feeding - cos I have to - no bottles or formula - what should I do to make sure he is ok? Can this affect supply? What else should I watch out for? I don't have a fever or anything but look quite pale - hopefully its something I ate.

    Any advice appreciated

I am pretty positve it is still sfe to continue feeding your bub. Just keep the your fluids up and rest. Also keep on top of hygine with hands etc

Hope you get better soon nothing worse than being sick woht a baby xxx

    HI there
as long as you are washing your hands thoroughly bub should be safe!

Keep your fluids up (at the early stage dont stress over food too much for yourself). - you dont want to get dehydrated from loss of fluid.

Also keep breastfeeding.. your body will be developing great antibodies which will be passed onto your baby through your breastmilk!

iF bub does start passing more frequent poo than usual - just try to get more frequent shorter bf's to keep him hydrated.

As funny as it sounds, BF now is the best thing you can do while you are sick for your bub

BFing is one of the best ways to keep your bubba safe because he's getting all the anti-bodies that you're making via the milk to help him fight it off.
I think you're doing all the right things - frequent handwashing, try not to touch him when you don't have too (hard I know, they're so kissable).
Make sure you look after yourself and get lots of liquids. The gastrolyte stuff from the chemists is a good way to keep your salts and blood sugars up. It might be worth popping down to the Dr if you're feeling so rotten so soon after birthing because gastro and recovering from birth is a big load on your body

    Hi Control Freak
First keep on breastfeeding. Wash your hands with soap under running water for at least 1 minute after going to the toilet and before touching your baby. Make sure that you are drinking plenty of fluids. The burning is caused by the enzymes in your poo. These enzymes help to break down your food. Normally they do not get down as far as this but when you have diarrhoea they often do and when they do they can break down your flesh. So you need to remove these enzymes by washing your bum and then putting a barrier cream such as zinc cream or a nappy cream, on there. Be very generous with this cream.

Don't get all silly over the dishes either. REST YOURSELF!!! Drink heaps.

The runs can take it's toll badly enough when you are not recovering from birth and making enough milk for bubba.
