Red face Doc told us not to use the split system...

We've been having some respiratory probs with Blue since we moved into the new house about 2.5 months ago...

We've all been crook in fact anyways...

He's told us not to use the split system heater as it dries the air out too much and thats whats causing DS's cough etc....

Prob is....it's the only heater we have for the whole house.....
I always have the steamer going in the lounge during the day and bedroom at night but our house is really cold....

I have a 2400w oil heater but because we have such a big lounge and it joins he kitchen which can't be closed off I am concerned we are going to be too cold.

What do you think? Does anyone know anyways around this?

Try putting a few bowls of water around the house as this will help with the dry air.
I would also contact the maker of the split system and ask if they have any ideas how to help.

If you need another oil heater we have a small one here you can borrow as we don't use it at the moment.

    Ah now that makes sense....

I dry clothes on the clothes airer in the playroom cos the air is so dry, would that work?

Does the heater need a clean out? Does it have a filtery type thing?

Aww thanks Rivlas thats really sweet but I think we'll be ok ....

I just googled heating and your right if you have bowls of water out it will draw from that not from the moisture in the air so that will help - points for thinking

Lu - Cleaned all the filters a weeks or so ago so not that...

I wonder if I used 2 x steamers and then had some bowls of water around the place because at the end of the day wouldn't ANY type of heating that has a fan dry out the air??

If you have a big oil heater it should still be able to heat the space efficiently - they throw out a lot of heat. It might also be something you have to be aware of over summer too if it is reverse cycle - my DH can't sleep with aircon on for the same reason.

Unfortunately they will dry out the air & that prob is not helping. The only thing I could suggest is perhaps getting another oil heater to keep the house warm if you cant use that one. And I wouldn't leave the evap on at night time whilst sleeping (not sure if you do). Sorry that's prob not been much help. Keep up with the vapouriser they are great. FWIW we have a massive queenslander with gaps etc everywhere & we are using a oil heater due to our main heater not working & it's keeping us warm just fine.

Thanks Trill - our lounge is about 18 sq meters and then opens out onto the kitchen which can't be closed off - it's a pretty huge space so the oil heater doesn't cope with it - the other prob is I can't have it right where we are as can't have Blue rolling into it and burning himself and they get pretty damn hot....

Ahhh, that's a bugger then. I would go for the bowls of water about the place then, and maybe even get a clothes horse and hang the odd load of washing inside as well?
