Some, fitteds usually, don't have a water proof lining. AIO's, AI2's, pockets etc do, so don't need the cover.
    Fitteds & night nappies don't.

I'm fairly new to MCN's, but...

with some fitted nappies (like the bamboo and hemp Baby Beehinds I use), the whole nappy is made of absorbent material with no waterproof outer layer, which is why you need a cover. Other MCN's include a waterproof layer, so you don't need a cover.

Fitted MCNs generally have no waterproof layer and require a cover.
Night nappies also, you tens not to want to use PUL over night so most are fitteds, and wool covers work best for night time

AIO - All in One these dont need covers
AI2 - All in Two, this is a cover and a snap in insert. Sometimes the snap in is included in the price others you need to purchase seperately

Pockets - I dont think these need covers, none of mine do anyway.

to stop your babies clothes from geting soaked when wearing fitteds

to stop the wet spot when they are sleeping

to contain the wetness to the fitted nappy

Fleece is polyester hon...polyester is waterproof...so it actually allow's air flow to your babies bum and it 'draw's and evaporates wetness into the air. This can elimainate nappy rash but note that its not 100%...you can still get compressions leaks from them and if your babie wears them overnight, that the outter clothing can still feel slightly damp

And hon...covers arent made to be absorbent...they are ment to encase what the fitted nappy , terry square or prefold cant

ETA we need a meet up babe so I can show you

Fleece is more breathable than PUL. Wool is absorbant. Haven't used either myself yet though.
Fitted...is kinda just a usual MCN without the waterproof layer.

    thankyou

so u need covers for fitted nappies and ones that arnt water proof as such. Covers add more.. "security" to the nappy (is that the word im looking for?). and saves 6-7 clothes changes a day.

ok.. another quick question... canu resuse the cover if its not wet or damp??? like say they use a cover for a whole day????

Ive reused PUL covers a couple of times, as long as they arent dirty.

Yeah. I think PUL is ok, but should be aired out? So use one, use another one, then use the first again.

Remember the PVC pilchers?? PUL does the same job, but is breathable. Alot better for bub's skin.

Just wanted to add, I use my PUL covers for a whole day (and night) unless there is poo on it. I just air it out while changing DD.

I use BabyBehinds fitted bamboo and then the MotherEase Rikki PUL cover. It is the best combination I have found. Never a leak! BUT its pretty bulky!

MM, if you are looking for the cloth alternative to a sposie (which is what i was), then i found pocket nappies to be the best, just put on like a regular sposie, no worries. I bought fitted nappies and TBH, they are bulky and i cant be bothered putting a cover on, to me its like putting on 2 nappys at once KWIM?.
But fitted do tend to offer a better seal around the legs and with a cover last longer than pockets or AI1/2s.
My kid generally poops once a day and its rarely really ugly so pockets work for us and they are the easiest to get your head around (and DH's and daycare/grandma ect....)
Having said all of this, I am assuming you are buying for Mia, not a n/b, that would be a whole different story......

MLM - thanks for replying Yeah ive too thought about fitted nappies, being like putting a nappy on tiwce. I dont know if Mia will lay still that long!! Mia is sorta my test run, just looking into it all so when i have next bub im mighty prepared.

It's no big deal using a fitted and a cover! No more that putting on a nappy and then a pair of pants over the top IYKWIM Don't over analyze the time it may take you to use them because realistically it's only a couple of seconds.

very true Raven. lol. i do tend to look into things WAY too much!!

So another question... what are the best covers?? that arnt too $$$$? ive seen some that are horribly expensize and i dont see the sense in buying them as well as the flats or fitted and the snappis.. the liner etc etc. When u can just buy an AIO.
