Angry Frustrated! Want to try MCN's...help!

    Hello ladies,

I really like the idea of using MCN's. I've been doing a bit of research about them lately, but I seem to be going around in circles! Everyone has a different opinion on which brands are best, what kinds (ie: AIO, AI2...etc). I really don't know where to start now!

    Waaaah!!

I'm thinking that the best thing for me to do is buy a few different kinds and see what works

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good brand to start with? Maybe I should try buying some from 2 or 3 different brands? (Happy Heiny's seem to get a good write-up - should I try them?) I've noticed AIO seem to be the most popular...followed by pockets. I quite like the idea of pockets since they're meant to be quicker to dry (aren't they?). I will probably start off with disposables for new-born as this is our first baby and I want things to be as easy as possible while we are adjusting to a new person in our life!

Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

    TIA!

MCN's - would prob start on bub after a month or two depending on bubs size etc ..

I bought a couple of the most popular - Itti D'Lish (favourite - both snap in and sewn ins), Ecobubs (favourite), Cushie tushie - they didnt suit us in the long run so I have just passed them on, Happy Heiny's are good basic nappy - but I found when you snap them down the inner micro pocket poked out the back - not a huge deal - but cos I had built my stash - I have just forwarded these on too.

It really is trial and error with your new bub - but yeah, dont go out and buy 20 of one brand

It's so hard to bite the bullet and just get something to start with! I dithered so much I didn't get my first ones till C was 8 weeks old lol, though I'd seen them in action via a friend.

Is there anyone on BB that uses cloth near you? Maybe you could meet up and have a look and see what they use.

It's really not that much work to use cloth on a newborn from the start either. With all the leaks I got from sposies it wasn't any more work really

Definitely buy one or two in a range of brands and types (AIO, pockets, flats+cover etc). What works for one baby won't be ideal for the next. It's hard to know until you try them out. Personally I really like pockets because they are faster to dry and I can make them more absorbent or less. I also really like pre-folds + covers and made my own pre-folds so they were reasonably cheap.

The pockets I like are Greenkids and Ecobubs. The Greenkids are a one size fits most while the ecobubs are sized. The Baby Behinds Magicalls (sized) are pretty good too. Again though, that's just my opinion and what I've found works for DS. (Some of the AIOs I've tried, he leaks through the legs etc).

    Good luck!

Unfortunately I think it really is a case of trial and error. Everyone will have a different opinion because babies are all different sizes and some nappies fit better than others on your kid.
Yep, pockets are great and quick to dry, but you might find that with newborn poo they leak some. That's when a nappy with a separate cover can be really good. Have a crack at a few and see what you like - maybe in the early days while you are still using sposies you could trial a couple of different types, then when you're ready for cloth full time you'll have more of an idea of what style you like?

Thank you so much for all for your replies!

I think I am starting to accept that its not as straight-forward a process as I thought! And the best thing is to buy a few and try them out, as you say, different nappies fit different babies. So I think its just going to be trial and error - I just need to take the plunge and buy some!!

That will be my task for this weekend...to order 3 different brands. Oooh...getting a bit excited now!

Thanks so much for your help!

Teruteru - whats GDUNH?? I have ordered some actually, I got the Itti Bitti Trial Pack (on special for $39.95) and a trial pack from Baby Beehind (on special for $81, I think!). Was going to try some peapods too, but they seem to have some bad reviews so might not bother with them.

You are welcome to have a look at mine if you like. I have Greenkids, Pop-In, Itti Bitti, Baby Beehind Magicalls and bamboo fitted, Happy Heinys, Swaddlebee, Haute pockets, Bum Genius, Cushie Tushie (basix and couture)- just a couple of each. Can't remember any others! I just need some notice so that I can get them washed and dried! I am in Balga - about 10 mins from the city.

I felt the same as you before I bit the bullet so to speak. I found a lady in my area who did demonstrations, she also has a shop. I went into her shop and she let me try some out on DD and she also explained how to use the different types etc.

Is there someone in Perth who does demos? Maybe go onto some websites and see if they have stockist close to you.

FWIW - I love Ittis, Greenkids and I am trying out Pop-ins.

Its so overwhelming isnt ???? I think thats half the battle...understanding what the heck you must buy. Like others have suggested, i bought a couple of diff branded MCN and diff types. I also spoke to the salesperson over the phone and asked all sorts of silly questions.......
MCN were not for me - ive since given my stash away, but i felt happy with the selection of nappies i did have, and felt i gave it my best shot....guess what im saying is, dont stick to one brand, explore, then decide what works for you and bub.

Try a couple from each different sort of nappy. And don't forget your DH. My DH is not around much, but if his fav MCNs are not in the pile he grabs a sposie! (He much prefers velcro to snaps).
It's trial an error, and don't over look plain old cotton prefolds. They are very reasonably priced and I find them very handy to have around.
    Good Luck.

I saw a site the other day (while browsing the Great Nappy Hunt list) that offers a service that you can try out different brands of MCN's - I think like 6 different ones for 2 weeks for about $50. I know some people would perfer to actually spend the $50 on nappies, but I did think it was quite a good idea. I might consider it for #2 (if it happens ), as I have tended to stick to the nappies I love (Ittis and Baby Beehinds) for DS.
Or do you have a Baby Expo in your city? Great opportunity to have a look at different brands.
