    Abdominal Migraines

DD has been suffering headaches and stomach aches lately, last week she had 3 days off school with them. The GP has sent her for a neck xray and has suggested she is suffering abdominal migraines.

Does anyone here have a child who suffers these and can offer me some advice?

i had them from grade one through til early year 7 when they went to full blown headache migraines - was getting them weekly at least - ended up in hospital with suspected appendicitis more than once. in year 10 we went to a neurosurgeon who finally diagnosed the migraines and said they were "abnormal migraines" (ie, no neurological cause) and wanted to leave me on really expensive preventative meds for life. year 11 i got a migraine that had me so ill i couldn't move for four days. my aunt suggested i see a chiro - and i was cured within hours. i'd been in a car accident in grade 1 and had done damage to my neck - 10 years of hell from a neck injury!

if the neck xray comes back showing something, great - you know what to treat - if it comes back clear, take DD to a chiro and get them to check her out. if i get headaches now i'm straight of to the chiro - usuallly it's from my neck being out but sometimes it's from strained muscles in my neck and shoulders - due to the headaches i can't feel any muscular symptoms though... if my back is out lower down, i still sometimes get the migraine pains in my stomach too!

My brother got them when he was little and it turned out he needed his tonsils out!
What was happening was when he had inflamed tonsils he wouldn't get a sore throat he would get these abdominal migraines from the muck in his throat going down to his stomach. After he had his tonsils out he was fine.

my dp had abdominal migraines that turned into head migraines. He has never found a cure and wouldn't trust a chiro.

i trust my chiro - but i also had family who'd been seeing him for ages and trusted him - plus he also does massage and accupuncture - so isn't just a bone cruncher - he takes a more hollistic approach.. he has a myotherapist working with him, so if it's muscular he gets her involved (at no extra cost)

i will be getting him to check DD next time i see him - she got stuck in the birth canal and was pulled back out rather roughly during c/s so i want to make sure there are no dramas from that for her

My mum suffers from abdominal migraines (she has never had a headache migraine, although I was prone to them as a teenager). She doesn't get them so much anymore, by far her biggest trigger is stress. They were at their peak when she was going through the divorce with my dad but that was many years ago. TBH, there has never been much she can do for them, except ride it out, and try not to have too much stress in her life.

I'm sorry I can't help beyond that, I hope they can find something to help your DD.

Thanks for your repiles. I was taking her to an Osteopath for migraines last year when the Dr suggested we medicate her for them. The Osteo has worked really well for her. Her last appt was last November, she had the odd migraine between then and a few weeks ago when she started getting sore stomachs combined with headaches, she says they're different to the migraine headaches she gets. She was off school for 4 days with an episode last week so I thought i'd better get on to it.

From what I've read on the net it doesn't seem that the abdominal migraines are coupled with headaches, which is what she's gettting. Is there anything she can take for the abdominal migraines (if that's waht they are) to relieve the pain? They just seem to cripple her and pain relief doesn't seem to relieve her.

My dd1 gets them with stress etc, and panadol actually helps to dull the pain.

I suffered them as a kid and now get migranes at least monthly some times more often and nothing has seemed to stop them from coming.

We've just got back from the Optometrist and she needs glasses, still doesn't explain the stomach aches though.
