skinpr!ck tests: do I need to avoid the foods so it's not in breastmilk?

My DS had skinpr!ck tests at the RCH allergy clinic yesterday and showed up with allergies to eggs, hazelnuts and cashews. We've been advised to avoid all treenuts and eggs until we go back for review in 6 months. They can't advise us what sort of reaction he would have if he accidentally consumed them (i.e. mild skin irritation versus anaphylaxis) so better safe than sorry. Thus far his history has been eczema (2.5 months), hives (with 2 particular outbreaks, cause unkown) and dermagraphia.

So he hasn't been fed any of the problem foods, but I do eat them. I forgot to ask them if I should be avoiding them or not? I've read that egg allergens can pass through breastmilk. I'm actually planning to stop feeding expressing in 4 weeks, and will slowly use what supply of EBM I have (4.5 litres frozen) as we phase in cow's milk. So obviously some of the EBM was produced on my normal diet, as I was not avoiding those particular foodswhile I stockpiled.

So I don't know if it's worth cutting egg/nuts out for these last 4 weeks or not, so the fresh EBM would be free of them. I'm gonna ring them and check on Monday, but wondered if anyone else had experience with this?

I am not sure, but I do have a DD who is allergic (peanuts, tree nuts, eggs) and the testing cannot determine the severity. I would suggest not consuming the things DS is allergic to though, as with my DS I have been advised to avoid DD's allergens just incase.
Saying that, please do double check , as maybe it's best to continue what you're doing .They do say if you go total cold turkey it can make it worse. SOrry to not be much help. Good luck xo

    Well hellllooooooooooo

Nuts - unless you are going to be having handfuls I wouldnt worry too much and all the stuff that says "trace" I would still eat

Eggs - I have different feelings on this - I ate eggs with DS1 early on and he had tummy pains which I finally put down to my consumption. So yes, I would steer clear of egg dishes like scrambled etc, quiches, zucchini slice that type of thing - but I wouldn't worry again about things that have cooked egg in them like cakes or rissoles for binding etc.

Immunisations have a type of egg *something* in them - did X ever have a reaction to his immunisations? I would ask about this too??

Funny story - I ate heaps of nuts during my preg and morning sickness with DS1 - he did have peanut butter a few times from 1 - 2 years old (that was his repeated exposure ) - and now he has anaphyalactic reaction to peanuts and tree nuts as you know - some studies say there could be a relationship - I am thinking there may be something in it (for me anyway!)

no he was fine with his shots, not even a red mark on his fat little leggies. But I will check before his 1 yr shots.
And I LIVED on peanut butter in 1st tri... but he was all clear on peanuts! But interesting about your theory. Did you avoid them with Z's PG? We were actually told to give him peanut butter, but just avoid all the treenuts for now.

As for eggs... ooooh noooooooooooooo! I love eggs. I do eat plenty of them too - given my limited diet anyway. Ah crap I really hadn't thought this thru. Mebbe I'll stop pumping tomorrow oh well, only 4 weeks to go. And I eat a reasonable amount of nuts too... given the whole wheat free thing. Farrrrrk!

Mumma2three & krissy2 - thanks for your responses. I'm gonna check with his paed & also ring the allergy clinic back too. Why oh why didn't I think of this while I was there!!?!

I would probably hold off with his next round of vaccinations as there are sooooo many additives that are just plain dodgy and if he has allergies to some things, it's not unreasonable to expect that he could develop allergies to other things, but you should speak to your allergist about that.

I just rang back and checked, and yes I'm not supposed to eat them either
Geesh, what IS it with my diet (already can't eat wheat, onion, some veggies, most fruits) ... thank goodness it's only 4 weeks till I stop expressing!!!
