I went and had a shoulder, neck and head massage today at one of those massage pplaces in the shopping centres. I have since had really bad abdominal pain and have read it can cause preterm labour, can anyoen confirm this, I suppose it is all too late to stop it now?
She really ground at my shoulders but I didnt think there would be a problem!
I am really stressing out that I have done something wrong!
Hi Lisa,
THere are certain pressure points that can help bring on labour, but I'm pretty sure they aren't around your neck, head and shoulders. More in the lower back (sacral region) and feet, i think. I also think that unless your body is really ready that it is unlikely to send you into labour.
Perhaps the abdominal pain is just stretching of the ligaments etc. In future though I'd probably just go to a pre-natal massage therapist, or make sure you advise the therapist that you are pregnant.
No, there is a pressure point in your shoulders that can induce labour, and should be avoided whilst pregnant. It is right in that fleshy part on the top of your shoulders, the point where if somebody presses really hard it almost makes you collapse into the ground IYKWIM? This is why it is especially important to only go to people trained in pregnancy massage, they know where to avoid.
Just wanted to add that about a week and a half before due to give birth, i went to a woman who was "qualified" in preg massage ...at first i was happy she didn't seem to be too light as i like deep massage..but i said to her just go as deep as is safe..i'm used to getting the deepest/remedial when not pg... she hurt me!..pushed way too hard and corked a muscle in my middle back..and didn't let up until i was feeling nauseous and i needed to stop... she didn't seem to think she did anything out of the ordinary for a pg massage...a day and a half later (39weeks exactly) i woke up at 4.30am with what i thought might be my water breaking..was fresh blood...had to get my waters broken that morning (as they didn't know why i was bleeding, had a PERFECT pg until that point) i didn't think the two would be related until after the whole ordeal...
i'm still not sure but (don't want to hijack but if anyone has an opinion on this i'm all ears)
I will not be getting another massage while pg again...
Well I had cramping for quite a while last night, rang the hospital and luckily got a nurse that is trained in massage, she said that yes there are trigger points there, but it usually only brings on labour in latter pregnancy (I am 16 weeks). She also rang my OB who wants to see me today to check up on everything, but seems to think it will be okay!
No more massages for me, she pushed so hard on my shoulders that they are now bruised!
Sorry you've had that experience Hopefully your OB finds that all is very well today.
Did the therapist take a case history before giving you a massage? (They should at least ask if you are pregnant.) If you do see another therapist of any kind, do tell them you're pregnant.
Hope you are feeling better now... and that the pain in your shoulders settles down soon.
