Does anyone use this? I know the basics and use Feng Shui remedies according to the Bagua (zones) and our house.
Today as I was doing the school run I came across something interesting on the foot-path. It was a laminated bookmark. I think it was a souvenir from Scotland, Dunkeld Cathedral, Perthshire. It had, what I think was, some dried and pressed heather on it.
I dream of living in Europe... have for years. Scotland is one place high on my list. So using my knowledge of Feng Shui I have placed this bookmark in my garden, under the leaves, of the Travel sector of our property. I wonder if it will help!
Great thread. I've actually been thinking about this a lot lately because my house apparently has a bad feng shui zone. You can see straight through to the backyard from the front door. Have done a little bit of googling on it but couldn't find much.
One thing that I do that I read once in a magazine article, is to always put the toilet seat lid down as it apparently prevents money being "flushed" away.
The flow of Chi (energy) through a home constitutes a large part of Feng Shui... and when you think about it most of it makes logical, scientific sense. If a place has Chi that is too fast (like your hallway) or too slow (say in a room with poor ventilation) it will disrupt things in a practical sense. So Chi can be airflow, light, heat etc.
With your hallway you essentially need to redirect the Chi into the rooms that are off your hallway. Do do this you can place things in the path of the Chi... like plants or beaded curtains etc... or you can reflect the chi into the rooms using mirrors. Mirrors are a very frequently used "remedy" for problems.
The toilet seat in a down position stops the Chi from escaping (or bad Chi coming out in the form of germs). Drafts are negative Chi too.
You could see it as more of a superstition but I find that there is usually a practical reason behind it if you think about it.
The Bagua consists of 9 zones. The zones include: Health, Wealth, Family, Travel, Knowledge etc. You can find out what each part of your homes relates to by drawing a simple plan of your home on a piece of paper then drawing a grid over the top. 3 x 3 squares like a game of noughts and crosses. Make sure you cover your whole property including the front and back yard. If your house isn't square then you have "missing" zones. There are remedies for this. The zone at the front right of our property is your Travel and Helpful People zone. At our house it is the drive way. Near our drive way we have a daffodil garden that is well within the zone. This is where i have placed the bookmark from Scotland...lets see if it helps!
Google Feng Shui Bagua and you will find a chart of the zones.

Hi,
I've started Feng Shui'ing the house and at the moment I'm feeling so much better for it. I'm waking up of a morning with positive energy. I've still got a bit to go and I'm hoping my practices are correct.
Q: I have an existing tiled mirror which is floor to ceiling (very 70s-80s) in the hallway that is directly in front of the front door, I've always wondered what effect this may have on the household, where by good energy comes in and goes back out the door. Rarely is the front door open as we utilise the backdoor.
Thanks for that Bath! We don't have a hallway as such, from our front door there is a tiny entrance, and straight ahead you walk into our biggest living space - dining/family room and straight through to the backyard. We have a large pond at the end of our patio space with koi in it which I've also heard is a good feng shui thing. Is that true? The dining/family room is where visitors tend to sit down. This room is the centre of our house.
It's all so interesting. Thanks for inspiring me to research further Bath!
Yes, I have heard that mirrors placed infront of the front door (so that you see yourself as you enter) reflect the Chi back out. It's interesting that you use the back door instead. Maybe this is a subconscious strategy to avoid the loss of Chi? I have also heard that the first thing you see when you enter your home is the thing that will dominate your life. For example: if the first thing you see is a wall of family photos then family will be a very big part of your life. The middle front or entrance part of the property is ruled by the Career zone too. I have a friend who enters her house through the garage into the laundry and so the first things she sees is often clothes. She works in fashion... so maybe this works for her. I have heard that you should orientate the Bagua according to your main entrance point too. We live in a traditional house with front steps and a veranda and then a foyer. This is all part of the Career zone so I try to make sure it's not cluttered because I worry that if it is DH's job might suffer!
Getting back to your wall of mirrors CBG would it be possible to somehow cover them a bit? Maybe with indoor plants or a thin gauze curtain? Failing that you might be able to buy some Feng Shui objects to enhance the zone in other ways? Each zone has it's optimal colours... i think the career zone is black and pale blue... the remedy might be to introduce more of those colours. Each zone also has an element eg earth, water, fire, metal. I think metal is the career zone element so at least mirrors are the right element (silver backing).
This is a really interesting thread, I dont know alot about feng shui but am definately interested. I have always avoided having the feet of our bed facing the door as I believe this is bad luck in feng shui terms? We just moved bedrooms about a month ago and I have started having not so good dreams, I wonder whether the energy in our room would be affecting this??
Hopefully the bookmark brings you good luck Bathsheba
Don't worry about hijacking this thread It's for all things Feng Shui!
We are about to swap our bedroom with DD (so that we get the one with the ensuite LOL) and then our feet will be pointing out the door too. But our bed has a very high kick board at the end of the bed which I'm hoping will help. I also might drape a patchwork quilt or crocheted rug over the end of it to act as a visual barrier.
As for crystals: anything natural is good. Rose quartz is good for bedrooms... promotes love, harmony and inner peace.... and fertility
I also think the very centre of the house (imagine the grid... the middle zone) is a very sensitive area. If this area is weak then your whole life is meant to be affected. We have a square central room in our 1940's era home that I think used to be the old kitchen... is is dark now that the house has an extension... so i have used that to good effect by making it the TV room... with floorboards and tapestry drapes etc it is quite a good space... but has too much traffic now that the kids are older so I'm going to make some changes. I think it's now going to be the computer area... so i can use the fact that I'm always walking through it to keep an eye on my teenage DD's computer usage.
I've been thinking about this lately too Bath, our last two homes had corners cut off, from memory related to children and career, but this house is a much more regular shape and still has its corners. Since we have been here I have had a lot of success looking for work and I wasn't even looking IYKWIM. Bit worried about the middle zone though, because right in the middle is a dark and dangerous stair case down to the garage and guest room. Do you know what this zone relates to?
The middle zone, I believe, is the Chi and is ruled by the element Earth. It represents our stability. You sound a bit concerned about your central area? If your Wealth zone (far, back left) of your property is strong you might find that resources come easily to you but due to a weak central Chi area you might be finding that they are hard to keep? You should try to do something to this area to make yourself feel better about it. The colour yellow represent Earth and could strengthen it. Also, Metal is the element that fortifies Earth. So the introduction of metalic or reflective (glass mirrors etc) objects might help. Other symptoms of a lacking Earth energy could be a lack of direction, lethargy or an inability to set goals. Try adding ceramics or rocks. Fire also adds to Earth (think of the volcano spewing forth rocks and lava as it builds the land around it) so firey colours could help to revitalise this area.
Bath, just a quick question. When mapping out the zones, do you just do the house building or do you map out the entire property including the back and front yards?
Very interesting Bath, my office is in the far back left of the house and it seems that opportunities are arising for me in a career sense. But money definitely does seem to be going out faster than its coming in, and we should have enough. Thanks you've given me some ideas about how I can try to neutralise the effect a bit.
Eluned: from what I have read you can do all (whole property) or just the house. I do both. You can even place the bagua over a room and just do it. For example: If I was thinking of buying a property I might consider the whole house and block. Once I have bought the property I might consider focussing on the house. If a particular zone of the house doesn't feel right I might lay the bagua over that room or area. If you do a room you orient the bagua either according to your entry point or using the compass. I prefer to orient it according to the main entry point.
Charlie: I have about 4 books on Feng Shui. They all essentially say similar things... but each one has a focus. I have one for the garden for example. I think buying a small collection is better than looking for a comprehensive book. The net is also a great source of info.
