dd1 just asked for cream on her vagina cause it was sore. she had just been to the toilet. when i put the cream on her vagina was really red. along the lenght of the labia more than anything. she is fully toilet trained (wears a nappy to bed which was actually dry this morning when she woke up). so it cant be nappy rash. do UTI cause redness? should i just persist with the sudocream or do you think see a doctor?
I would say it's thrush babe. I use Daktozin cream for Ava, you can get it over the counter. And the best thing is you can use it for Nappy Rash too. And it pretty much clears up in a day, it's not like sudocream where it comes off when they wee, it pretty much stays there until their next bath. I swear by it. I threw out all my bepanthen, and sudocream and all the other crap creams and I swear by Daktozin.
DD1 had some issues - red and sore too. Turned out to be a reaction to the bubble bath I had been using not thrush (which is what I thought too). The stuff I had bought had parabens in it - which can act as oestrogen and cause an inflammation of the girls genitals (as my chemist explained it). Having had no idea I was quite distraught as I had caused it....so we have switched to an organic bubble bath with no parabens/SLS etc and I am now way more wary of what I buy. I have just found a cheaper organic one at our local Safeway - smells like Berries that she loves - as it is pink of course!!!!
Makes me so mad that they can sell stuff like that!!! It seems all the character bubbles have the nasties in it too...caused us heaps of grief! Good luck - I hope it is quickly resolved. Perhaps a visit to your GP etc to get a diagnosis before doing anything.
Daktozin sounds great - I have always found Sudocream to work well but will look out for this if it persists next time. i also sometimes use an organic baby balm which works within a day.
Mak - i had been told by my doctor when pregnant first time round that females should never use bubble bath as it is well known to be a cause of UTI in any age and in fact we shouldn't use soap 'down there' unless it's something gentle like a natural olive soap or similar as the vagina area is self cleansing. Really alerted me to never using bubble baths with the kids.
Thanks for the advice on bubble bath. DD has a very red vagina and of course I use bubble bath - 'i diddn't know better. God this makes me furious!!!!

Liviam - I know it is awful isn't it. I am sure we are not the only ones though. It is called Organic Care - 3 in 1 Berry Bliss - it is a Shampoo/Body wash. Very pink with a fairy on it, says no sls, parabens or petrochemical products - was low down on the shelves in the midst of the shampoos and was ~ $4 for 400mls. Prior to that we were using Sukin bodywash from the chemist. I just use it to wash her hair then we fluff up the water - so kinda pretending it is bubbly - she is an anti bath girl, so trying to limit its use but still get her clean occasionally....
well we only use QV wash in the bath because of normal bubble bath irritating her eczema and she has been having showers lately anyway. i have some daktozin which i will use. there is no discharge that i can see, does thrush in kids have different syptomes (ie. no discharge just redness)
DD had / has this problem. After it reocurred alot, I took her to the dr. He said it was some thing called 'vaginimus' (sp?) or something like that. Basically it is where a little dirt or sand (often miniscule) gets embedded into the vagina (usually around or in the uretha) and causes an infection. Aparently it is extremly common in toddlers and young children, who may play in sandpits, or jus outside in the backyard. We were given som antibiotics to clear up the infection and some cortisol cream (her special bum cream ) to help with the redness and tenderness.
Hollo it seems there is so much it could be. It's probably worth while getting her checked just to be on the safe side. DD has a red vagina as well because she has just discovered it and I'm having trouble keeping her hands out of her nappy. Gotta love toddlers.
It does sound like it could be anything! DD1 suffers from a yeast allergy which predominately affects the skin around her mouth. However, she has had a yeast infection around her vagina and it was red dots (I freaked) and no discharge. She also gets a red vagina sometimes as I am toilet training her and she scrubs with the toilet paper! Good to have it looked at anyhow.

Thrush doesn't always have discharge. DD's didn't. But maybe get her checked just to be sure. I use Johnson's milk bath and haven't noticed it being problematic for dd, but all kids are different hey. But I have decided just purely out of price that once she's finished her shampoo and the bath wash i am switching to Natural stuff. Just so much better and cheaper ya know.
DD1 would often get this and we ended up taking her to the Dr. He just classed it as non specific vaginimus. Basically as already has been said it is to do with they way that they wipe and the use of bubble bath. There is no need to have bubble bath for every bath and actually something like vinegar in the bath water can be very helpful.
I would be very reluctant to routinely use something like daktozin especially if it has not been 100% diagnosed with thrush. I would not use Caneston on myself unless I was really sure I had thrush. I suffer from vulval dermatitis, so I know first hand how just guessing at remedies can make things worse, when all you need is the right cream prescribed and tips on how to manage the condition. I tried self treating for ages with no much luck. In my case what I have to do is the same as what we have to do with DD1.
With these conditions less is better than more, less products, less artificial fabrics etc
