    so annoyed with GP

Jacob is sick, Again. has had a high temp for 3 days now (39.5) went to GP yesterday (earliest I could get in) DS had a double ear infection a few weeks back, thought it might be the same thing, except he has tis funny little cough thing going on as well, and has been screaming for about 3 hrs every night (12-3am)

The GP looked in his ears and gave him the all clear, took his temp (39.3) and looked at his throat and DS promptly threw up all over him. I was told it was Tonsilitis, given script for ABS and told to 4 hrly dose with panadol etc.

got script, gave him a dose and some panadol, he had a sleep,...........next dose, more panadol, bath and bed etc, as soon as went to have a feed (still BFing) he threw up his dinner all over me and our bed.

Last time he was sick I had trouble giving him panadol, he would just throw it straight back up, so I rushed out and bought some suppositories, not fun, but it worked, he had a feed then went to sleep.
woke at around midnight, screaming, fed him first, then he came off and threw up the entire feed all over me, and kept chucking, temp was 39.5, he was shaking and twitchy, got another supp in, then he had a massive diarrhea poo, which made the supp pretty useless.
At this pointI got scared, I rang the parents helpline who told me to give him another supp, and take him to hospital, so I did. In that time DS had thrown up around 6-8 x.
I pulled myself together and jumped in the car with DS, got to hospital at around 2am, by this time DS temp had gone down and he was being his cheeky self, charming the doctor and nurses.
So the Doc at ED says that its possibly a reaction to the ABs, he also said that DS has no signs of tonsilitis, his tonsils all looked clear but his throat was a little red, he told me to give him another dose of ABS this morning, but if he started chucking again not to give him anymore. If his temp went back up and the symptoms continued over the next 24hrs to take him back in to ED.

We got home at around 5:30am, DS asleep straight away, then he woke at 7am and had another feed and threw up allover me again, temp was back up to 38, gave another supp, then he had another poo, diarrhea again. He went back to sleep.
Woke at 10am, gave panadol by mouth this time, no chucks,
I rang a pharmacist friend of mine and asked if he thought I should be giving DS the ABs, he said if it was his kids, he wouldnt. so I havent.

so now I am at a bit of a loss as to what to do or think, am considering making another Doc appt, but I wont get in anywhere for another day or so, by which time this might all be over, DS still has a temp but he hasnt chucked now since 7am. I am giving him lots of water, which he is guzzling down, lots of BFs, he isnt interested in food.
I just really dont want to have another night like last night. My poor baby, It hurts so much to see him in such obvious distress, and there is not a lot I can do about it.
I suppose this is more of a vent and a rant than anything. If you read all this, Thankyou, you deserve a chockie and a lie down. x

Big I hope the little guy feels better soon... it's so hard isn't it when they are sick.

Can you get in to see another doctor anywhere? Tell them it's urgent? I think maybe a second opinion would make you feel better too, kwim...
ABs generally need to be finished once started, unless of course they are causing things to be worse!
I was thinking maybe gastro? Can cause high temps, and if he has diahorrea as well...

hope it all clears up soon for you

Sometimes when they are really sick they can react to the ABs.
If the temp is still high in the morning take him back to ED and tell them you were told to bring him back if he hadn't improved. Hopefully you will get in quicker.
If not try another DR, second opinion never goes astray and does help relieve your stress.
Hope he is on the mend soon

Thankyou so much for your kind words ladies, we had an ok day on wednesday, Jacob pretty much slept all day, temp still up, but not as high as before, only had one chuck in the morning and one that night. He slept ok wed night, but woke with temp spike, back up to 39+, he woke thurs morning at 7am and chucked with panadol by mouth, so suppository again.
I really hate putting those things things in, I feel like I am violating my poor boy. he thrashes and screams so much, but I worked out that its easier to put in if he is on his tummy.
I rang local GP and surprise, surprise I was able to get in pretty much straight away, saw a different GP who I explained the whole scenario to, she reviewed his history and starting bagging me about him not having his rota virus vax, said that it was probably gastro as he wasnt vaccd, (I delayed his vax till he was 6 months, so was too old to have it) she gave me a baggie witha poo scooper and told me to bring a sample in as soon as he did a poo, gave me a leaflet on gastro and sent me out the door, there was more to it, but she made me so angry (have previously seen this woman, told me to stop BFing as he was so big he didnt need it)
So we went home, DS didnt have a temp all day, was his normal self but then started to sound rather horase, I was also getting a bit worried as he stopped wanting to BF at all and would not drink any water, by 6pm, I was very worried, only 1 wet nappy all day, I tried to feed him some very watery vegies, only minimal interest, then chucked it. I put him in the bath and noted with shock that my normal water loving baby was screaming, I think as he had urinated in the bath , I started thinking he might have a urine infection, something the hospital had suggested but not one of the docs I had seen had bothered with a urine sample.
I rang the parents helpline again, they were concerned about the lack of wet nappies, said I should get him to another doc straight away, I rang another late night service, tey were fully booked up but when I explained the situation they told me to bring in anyway.
I saw a doc at around 9pm, DS still had no temp () but was very horse by now, the doc was a bit surprised at everything we had been through but he explained that it was most likely a nasty viral infection, the chucking and sloppy poo a reaction to the ABs and heving a high temp, he was pleased that his temp was now right down and had been for a good 12 hours, he said that Jacob wasnt displaying any signs of dehydration, and when we took his nappy off, he had another wee. The doc said that now the virus had been through his body it would more than likely turn into a upper respiratoy tract infection, lots of coughing and hoarseness, which should resolve in around a week or two. thi smakes sense to me finally. I feel ok with that diagnosis. I just KNEW that the others werent quite right.
But then last night at midnight his temp spiked again at 39+, he took the panadol by mouth ok, and drank about 100mls of water and had 2 BFs, he woke at 4am crying in such a way that he was obviously in pain, nearly made me cry too, he had no temp, but I gave him some panadol anyway.
now I have woken this morning with a sore throat and snotty nose, yay, and its now Jacobs First birthday, poor little guy, to be sick on his birthday

Happy 1st Birthday Jacob, sorry you are not well birthday boy!!! Hope your feeling better very quickly..

I'm sorry Starrsky that you had to go through all that, I too think that the other Dr's were not quite on the right track with him...as for the female Dr and the breast feeding comment, I would complain...and refuse to EVER see her again..

And FYI I thought you might be interested to know, I investigated getting the rota vaccine for myself about 2 years ago and after a bit of research from my family Dr and Nurse they were told by the studies done, that the vaccine has little or no effect for a person over 36months, obviously I am too old but DS is certainlty not, you might be able to do some more research into this if you rstill interested in getting it...

Gosh you poor things. It doesn`t take long for me to get revved up about the issue of finding a decent GP.A few months ago my DD had a really nasty viral illness with lots of spews and poos then the rest of the family came down with the same which was no holiday I can tell you. When I took her to hospital they told me it was a cold!!!!!?????
Fortunately a nurse was good enough to tell my that I was better off nursing her at home and that at her age (10 months) they wouldnt do anything unless her eyes were sunken and her skin had gone baggy regardless of how few nappies she had wet.If she had been very young they would have done more.
I have to say I didn`t even bother with the GP and I`m still yet to find one I really trust to look after my DD.I think it was absolutely and totally out of order for the second GP to criticise you about your child not having had the rotavirus immunisation. It almost seems like she was criticising you to get you back for criticising her profession. This was not the time for a discussion regarding immunisations when your child was acutely ill, this info could have been imparted at a later date.As for the comment on breastfeeding, thats just a disgrace.
I have worked for many years in the health service and have to admit I have judged people negatively for using many different GPs.Now I find myself in a similar situation and am still looking for one I respect enough.
The playright Alan Bennett wrote in regards to seeing doctors that ,
"the trick is not to go looking for light at the end of the tunnel."
Yeah we all know that they aren`t miracle workers but there`s something to be said about a good knowledge base and dare I say bedside manner or am I being too old fashioned. I`m sure there are som good ones out there.
Hope you and your little un are feeling better, it`s awful when you see them suffering and all you want is to be able to help them. Many hugs.

Starrysky I really hope your little guy is on the mend. What an awful few days for you; it's so hard when they are so little & they get sick. you are through the worst of it now.

    Happy Birthday Jacob!

GP's...don't even get me started. We had a fantastic Gp years ago then she got married & moved. I have never been able to find her equal
