    Washing mattresses and pillows

How do I do this? Take the mattress outside, hose it down, carpet cleaner?? and just leave it in the sun???

It's a plain foam mattress. And it has some vomit on it, thanks too ds. Shame.

Pillows?? Just throw them in the washer?? Won't they bunch up? Hand wash??

    I'm clueless

    TIA

i've washed pillows in our washing machine before...most of them went a funny shape...all the stuffing bunched up inside them and they haven't been the same since..we did manage to bash them out so they are half normal..but we did go and buy new pillows anyway...lol. So I wouldn't suggest putting them in the washing machine! Unless you did them on a delicate cycle? I can't remember which cycle we used for them. can you wash them in a bucket with some wool wash? Just dunk them in a few times and then rinse really well?

Not sure about the mattress...I don't think you'd want to be putting soap or anything on it as it will soak right in and may be difficult to get out. Perhaps just hose it and leave it in the sun? Is there a tag on the mattress that says how you can wash it?

Oh yeah .. now that you mention it. I once washed dh's fav pillow in my machine (that was before we were married) and I remember vaugly it bunching up more that it was already. It's a ugly stinky pillow and yes, he still has it and yes, he still uses it. I did have it drycleaned about a year and a half back, but our drycleaning has to be sent into the city and honestly ... I don't have enough pillows DS vommitted on TWO, so really no extra's left!!
Yeah, not going to do that. I wonder if I put it in the bath and step on it ....

Good point about the soap in the mattress. No tag - it is one of those really cheapy mattresses. I don't believe in expensive mattresses for kids. Just plain foam.

And it's such a lovely day out that I'll definatly be making use of Mr Sun
    Thanks

I invested in some microfibre pillows and doona covers about 2 years ago - all can go in the wash. INfact they encourage you to put your pillows in the wash coz of the nasties that live in them. They come out plumper, juicier and full of life once i wash them...and spring back to their original shape...they about $30-40 a pillow, but IMO worth it...

I usually remove the cotton cover on the mattresses and wash in the machine (cold water to stop shrinkage), then give the foam a quick hose off and dry in the sun. My advice would also be to invest in a couple of good plastic backed mattress protectors, you can get a similar thing for pillows too.
I always wash my pillows in the machine to freshen them up, they come up nice and fluffy after a stint in the dryer.
