Your Little Girl's Hair

what do you do with your little girl's hair?
have you chosen to grow it, or is it in a shorter style?

my 2.5 year old has quite long hair, its down to her shoulder blades, however has shorter parts which have taken longer to grow (her fringe which is down to her chin and bits at the side which are probably longer than chin length)

it always seems messy. i can sit and put it into two braids (which she hates getting done) and all the shorter bits always fall out, no matter what i do. i figure its all the playing, wriggling etc that a toddler does that works against her hair staying looking reasonable/decent.

i have tonight almost decided to get it cut into a bob style... probably about chin length, maybe slightly longer. i am then hoping to be able to just clip her growing fringe out the way and be done with it. No time wasting doing piggy tails and braids etc with her protesting the whole time.

i would love for her to have long lovely hair, but i just don't think its conducive to being a toddler, i can't seem to keep it neat.

is there anyone else out there who has chopped off their little girl's locks? was it easier having it shorter? will i regret it? i feel like we've been growing it and pesevering with it forever, so i'm hesitant to give up and have it shorter - but at the same time if its going to be easier to manage and look better, maybe longer hair can wait til she's 4 or 5...

your thoughts? sorry its a bit of a superficial thread!

My DD has very long hair for a 2yr old! Its half way down her back. I had a fringe cut a while ago and now I'm trying to grow it out. It is always in her face, though it doesn't seem to bother her I hate it! I usually just put the front bit of it into a pony tail on the top of her head or on the side (like a fountain, lol!) It's been really hot here the past week and I have just been putting it all up into a ponytail. I wet it and pull it back, then put 3-4 clips into it to stop the loose bits falling out. She usually takes the clips out though

I have brought sooo many of them! If it was just my decision I would cut it to a shoulderish length bob, but DH wants her to have long hair. And it is sooo beautiful too...

What about putting her hair in a french braid? If done when her hair is wet it can last a couple of days, and on day 3 when you take it out she will have lovely waves which will give her hair more texture and make it easier to clip back out the way.

DD#1 has short hair - but thats cos its taken her so long to grow any! Lol
shes only ever had one haircut and shes almost 3! I put it up in little pig tails or just clip it back - theres not enough for a pony tail or plaits yet

Emma, dd1 has the same length hair by the sounds of it. My problem is that she refuses to wear it up most of the time. I have recently found ?cradle cap on the back of her head/neck line and a few patches near the crown of her head. These are itchy and flakey....so I am in the midst of deciding to chop it off so we can manage her scalp issues and for the fact its messy and in her face, constantly getting food in it. I love her hair long but its unmanagable. Am waiting for our hairdresser to call me back to make an appointment, so when I get it cut, I will let you know my response!!!

Its so hard cutting their hair

but going by past experience even a little bit cut off makes it grow faster and thickens it up, hard but if she hates it being done maybe it owuld be better to wait a year or 2 until she likes it played with again??

Mt DD2 had long hair at that age which always looked a mess and got so knotty. I had it cut into a bob. It was soooo cute and always looked neat.

She actually had a bob until she went to kinder lol

my DD has never ever had long hair, so I don't know about cutting long hair off, but she has a concave bob. Really short at the back and longer at the front. This came about as she hates to have her hair brushed and as it was so fine it was always so knotty, so I figure I have bigger battles to fight and it has been in a bob since she was little. It has thickened up her fine hair immensely and we always get comments on it - even though there is never a brush through it.
I'm lucky though, she adores going to the hairdresser - just as well as it needs a cut about every month lol.

My DD1 had lovely hair and I cut her fringe but left her hair long, eventually I cut her hair and she lost her ringlets

, DD2's hair is crazy... half curly, half straight but not in a good way, she looks like she has bed head all the time. Even after brushing.... she refuses hair ties after 5-10 minutes and pulls everything out, she wakes up with Russell Brand's hairdo which is hilarious.... but not really looking like a cute toddler/preschooler.... We have decided to cut her hair for summer because its too much work, and I reckon she'll be happier without us fussing with it. It will suit her as well, she generally looks like a rock chick post gig.... its full on.

DD1 was bald til she was 3! So we didn't have that problem there (much as I really wanted to! lol) We managed to get her hair to her shoulders by the time she was 4, but then she decided to cut it all off! It ended up around her ears!

DD2 had long hair at 2, hers seemed pretty easy to me, but DD1 gave her a hair cut at 18 months, so she cut off all the fine bits of baby fluff iykwim.

IMO once they have that first good hair cut & all the fine whispy bits are gone it is so much neater & easier to look after. Just looks nice. Now that mine are 4 & 7, they've only just had their first decent hair cut since then. From midway down their back to their shoulders. When there are constant knots & nits to deal with it gets so much more fun!

hmmmmmmmmmmmm i think i've decided to get it cut! i'm so excited actually.... and worst case scenario - if i regret it, its only going to grow back, and in better condition, so its not a huge deal...

she has had quite a few haircuts before so is in reasonable condition from that....

re: the french braids, this is what i am resorting to every day, but all the somersaults on the floor, trampoline jumping, hiding under blankets and general play means the braids don't last long at all before the shorter pieces are falling in her face.... plus she hates getting her hair done which is unpleasant for both of us, although i love how it looks when its freshly braided.

i explained to her about getting her hair cut and not having to have braids or pig tails anymore, and just a clip in her fringe, and she replied with a smile 'that sounds like a good idea mum' which was so cute... i think she'll prefer it shorter, as i won't be always chasing her down to make it look neat.

ROFL Christy, I love that you think she has Russell Brand hair. And I love DD1's hair, it's just soo her I reckon.

My girls have terribly fine hair and it always looks really ratty and stringy when it's grown long so the longest I will let it get is shoulder length. ATM though they both have short bobs just under their chins because thats what they wanted. It makes their hair look nicer too, and thicker. Plus they can just comb it and it looks OK so I don't have to do it all the time.

Emma, I hope it goes well! DD1 has long curly hair (when wet it touches the top of her bottom) and I have to plait it every single day and use Redken leave in detangler so she doesn't have a melt down. I would love to cut it but DP refuses to get her hair cut - however, he's not the one who has to blow dry and brush it!!

I decided to get DD's hair cut into a nice bob. She has a lovely fringe and it sits just right. I still get to put it up though.

My DD has quite curly hair so it's all different lenghts even though you can't tell unless it's wet. I have decide to not cut it at all until it's at a length where I can even it up. I DO NOT WANT her to have a frigne cause I knwo hwo it hard it was for me to grow it out as a kid! I pull it back most days and use clips - if I part it to one side it tends to look nicer and stays in better.

In saying that little girls with bobs do look very cute too so there's no isse there - it just wouldn't suit my daughter.

DD1 sounds very similar, i think she wakes up looking more like Albert Einstein though. After EVERY sleep she has dreadlocks in the back. She HATEs me brushing it, and it looks ridicules when i do, frizzy afro kind of thing, so i only do it once a day when it is wet. sometimes every second day.

So we run with the wild look. Suits her personality. Old ladies tell me i should brush it , one said to me once "Oh my granddaughter has hair just like that..... don't worry it will get better!

I love her hair, but it is so hard to keep tidy. Maybe she needs a haircut too!
