Adminsitering AB's to a 5 month old - help please!!!!

This week dd was diagnosed with a uti (poor little mite) after a weekend of grizzliness, a moderate high temp for a day and smelly wet nappies. Her sunny personality has returned now but am SERIOUSLY STRUGGLING getting her to take her 1mL dose of amoxil 3 times a day....

Some must be getting in because she does seem much happier and smelly wees have gone but would feel better if I could get a little more in

So far have tried squirting it into her mouth all at once/ squirting it into her mouth little bits at a time/ squirting it as far down her throat as I can without hurting her/ letting her suck it out of the dropper - it all ends up being spat out in a milky dribbly mess - wily little creature has even learnt since Wed to clamp her jaw closed at the site of the stuff!

Will be dropping into my friendly local chemist tomorrow to ask for their advice (particularly if I can add it to food/formula/EBM?) but was hoping that some of you wonderful resourceful ladies will have some tips for me...

DS2 had to have oral ABs at 4 months.
we had big issues with dropper but what worked well was a soft spoon - we have heinz ones from when DS1 was first starting solids.
Anyway, i gave him the ABs on the spoon and he guzzled them down. Far less was dribbled out which made me feel a lot better that he was getting the right doseage

I used to puta teat from DD's bottles in her mouth then put the meds in and she happily took all of it. Might be worth a try.

Treat bub like you would give a dog tablets lol.

Put it down between the cheek and gums (it will distress bub if you try to pry the jaws open if she's not co-operating), slowly dispense the medicine from the syringe and stroke the throat till she swallows. The chemist told me to do it like this and it works!

If she has a dummy, pop the dummy in and use the syringe to slowly give it to her throught he side of her mouth. Because she's sucking, it'll go down.

Soft spoon is a great idea if she doesn't use a dummy.

And I love raven's idea! Will remember that!

Thank you everyone so very much for your responses We tried the amoxil via the bottle teat this evening and that seemed to work very well - still a little bit dribbled out but nowhere near as much

I am so relieved to have a few more ideas up my sleeve too in case the bottle teat method no longer works...

We're back to see the GP on Monday morning for a scan referral for dd (routine for when bubs get uti's apparently?), and also to do a follow-up urine test so hopefully enough ab has made it in to get the all-clear

    Thanks again!

Raven's advice is good. It's important not to squirt the medicine straight down the back of the throat - if you do, they may choke on it. As far into the back of the cheek as you can get it is usually the best spot, as they find it hard to tongue it back out from there.
