Minor Scratches in polished floor boards

Hi - hope someone can help with this. We have beautiful shiny floor boards that we have scratched in a few places (i.e., DH threw his belt on the floor as he usually does and hours later stepped on the buckle - left a lovely mark). Am wondering if anyone has found a way to hide these small scratches...I was thinking of clear nail polish but don't want to experiment too much.

If you know what type of wood it is, maybe you could ask a local cabinetmaker what they would do? If they're experienced in different types of timber they would know how to hide scratches I think
