I used flats at the start with DD2 you will need to get a few nappy snappies available from Kmart pretty cheap, liners i just used the disposable homebrand ones and they worked great and very affordable and yes decent covers also available and target, kmart and Big W at reasonable prices and they are washable and last for ages so well worth it as for folds we found all the ones we used at this site:

    Nappies

also gives you heaps of care info on there!

We purely used terry flats until DD was about 8months - I loved them! But they did get a bit hard when she was mobile (hence changing to pockets at 8months). I found while she was solely bf, a liner wasn't necessary -they went straight into the dry pail and then wash every 2 days - it didn't really get smelly either with just poo's. And some decent covers for protecting clothes - I liked the PUL from baby beehinds. we even used these at night and I know most don't recommend pul for overnight, but dd didn't seem to be affected - we never got nappy rash when she was little. And rather than use old fashioned pins, you can get clips ( ithink they are called snappi's but I might be wrong) - they are t-shaped and havea row of little 'teeth' that grab the terry material- bigw have them in a pack of 3. they make nappy change so much easier, and you don't have to worry about stabbing you or your dd!

as for folds, there is a good website somewhere - I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will pop in soon!

i use terry flats for DD, with a Snappi and a cover from Big W (they're only about $4 each). I use disposable liners (box of 100 from Woolies for about $3), I find they keep her skin a lot dryer, rather than being right next to a wet nappy. She hasn't had nappy rash yet, apart from a very mild patch when she was younger which cleared up by the next day after putting some cornflour on it).

I can't remember the website I found with a heap of different folds, but at the moment I fold the nappy like a kite (so two diagonal corners into the middle), then fold the top of the triangle down so it makes a kite with a flat top, and then fold the tail of the kite up to the length I need. It's a little bulky (the pants she wears need to be at least 1 size bigger than the size top she is in!) but I find its very absorbent, even for overnight when she happens to sleep through.

I wash nappies every second day (just throw them in a bucket until I do a load) with Napisan and they come out really well, even the pooey ones (which I rinse after I take them off). I have quite a few white ones, and even though I dont soak the dirty ones none of them have stains.

I used terry flats for DS til he was about 9 months old, they were awesome. I used the kite fold, snappies and i bought a metre of polar fleece and cut it in strips to use as liners. I just used to dry pail them and then wash them with Omo. Oh, and I just used the plastic nappy covers from Kmart

So good to be able to read all your posts, and check out those websites!

    Thanks, ladies!

DH and I are also completely going the cloth nappy way. Better for our bank account, better for the environment, and from the sounds of things, probably better for Sprog, too!

Websites seem to differ a lot however in saying how many nappies to buy ... some say 10-15, some say 60!

Same with liners. I like the idea of getting a meter of polar fleece and a meter of flannelette and making my own reusable liners (and having disposables for when out) but as for nappies ... is 40 enough?

I'm thinking if newborns use 10-15 nappies per day initially, then 30 should be enough, but then (given Sprog is due late May, and Melbourne can be pretty wet!) I shouldn't assume they will dry straight away ...

How many square nappies do you ladies use?

I also love the different "modern cloth nappies" that seem to be out everywhere at the moment! They're so gorgeous, and maybe using them will also start conversations, which might help me encourage some friends to try out cloth nappies ...

But I'm wondering though, given May will be pretty cold etc no one is likely to see them, as they will be under several layers of clothes! And they're pretty pricey ...

While I'd love to buy 3 or 4 of the modern cloth nappies (probably the two-in-ones, as they can be one size fits all) I'm wondering whether I should hold off until summer, when the super cute ones can be used as an outer garment ...

Do any of you use them?
