Extra stich in each row of knitting? I've just started today!
Hi everyone, I've just started knitting today after looking up how to do it on youtube. I have a pattern for a baby beannie which I don't really know how to read but I thought I'd start off knitting the 1st part which is casting on 49 stiches and than work in garter st until work measures 15 cm. I presume that this means to keep making new rows until I have 15 cm's worth of knitting... Than I was planing to ask a client at work how to read the rest of the pattern.
I've managed to cast on 49 stitches and than do three more rows but each time I do a new row I've noticed that I end up with another stich (or 2) ??? Oh I don't know there is now about 56ish stiches! What have I done wrong or is that supposed to happen? Am I meant to just flip over the 1st and last stich onto the right hand knitting needle?
No it's not meant to happen, you only increase if you need to.
You need to be careful that when you put the wool around you are only doing it once, and once you've also knitted the stitch, that you are dropping the bit off your needle, that is most likely how you getting extra stitches.
And NO, don't flip the first and last stitch over, that won't work, you are meant to knit it.
Thanks ausgirl You've given me a bit of a giggle at myself lol I only did 3 rows so I might try to undo it all (if it's easy enough to do that) or start again... Gosh it's so much fun though, I really enjoyed what I have done so far, hopefully I will be able to make the beanie right to the end! Thanks again
