Hearing tests in 12 mont old

I was just wondering if I could have anyones opinions or what you would do in my circumastance,me and Dh just are unsure what to do,the story goes back to when our baby girl was born,at the hospital they did a random routine hearing test, our baby passed no worries but while we had it done they were asking our family history, well Dh has no hearing at all in his left ear so they said although our baby passed the test would they mind if we come back for another test when shes 6 months to be sure, well shes been having tests since then, shes had another 3,the first one didnt go real well, she wouldnt cooperate so we couldnt get all reults but mainly they said it was good, the next one they said wasnt real good but never bad enough for needing hearing aid but they will still keep testing well the last 2 times have been bad,i personally feel its because she cant understand the test enough and its not accurate, today we had another one and they told us that they were refering us to an ear specialist as they feel she will definetly have a hearing aid maybe even one for each ear.I just feel i need another opinion, one of the tests is just silly they want her to associate noise with a puppet and only look when she hears the noise well any child looks for the puppet its just all so strange she has never given me any indication that she cant hear, they said her hearing isnt real good in the left ear and not real good in other either,im not in denial i just dont know how they can tell for sure? The next step is the ear specialist so im hoping they do a better test but i just feel shes totally fine!!!!I just dont know what to do!Its only because of Dh that we are here its not as if weve noticed her not hearing or turning her head its all so crazy!!Any opinions would be so much appreciated!!

My youngest son had monthly hearing tests from 5 months old. At 7 months he was diagnosed to be moderately to severely deaf in both ears and was given hearing aids. He also had glue ear but no way was the glue ear bad enough to explain the test results.

Fast forward to 15 months when he had grommets insterted and an ABR hearing test under GA which revealed terrible glue ear and perfect hearing once this was cleared.

Basically the tests are not hugely accurate, although they do give a good idea. Has your child been tested for glue ear? Have they done a hearing test under GA? At the age she is it is hard to determine the true level of deafness without looking into both these things. If you are not happy ask for a 2nd opinion.

Big hugs though, it is an awful time to hear your child needs aids. PM me if you have any questions

I have had to have the tests for my 2 year old (tested as he has a speech delay) this showed hearing loss, and they were able to tell me at the test that it was not permanent and so probably due to glue ear. The trip to the ENT specialist confirmed this - grommets in, speech improving. The test was put toy people in a boat when you hear a sound.

My 10m old was harder to test ( tested as he had meningitis @3m) and the process sounds similar to yours. Each time a sound was played, the tv to one side flashed with a cartoon picture. It's not precise, but I guess that's the best you can do at that age. Result was ok (inconclusive) but I was told to come back at 2 years for another test.

I think you will learn more from the ENT Specialist as the hearing test is just that - hearing only. The ENT Sp will be more able to investigate causes and possible solutions, aides to the issue (if there is one).

It's great that you are onto it early. All the best.
