    Question Too cold?

I am just wondering how people tell when a bub is cold through the night ....... obviously if bub is too warm s/he will sweat or be clammy but how do you tell if bubbie is warm enough on a cool night?

here is what happened last night:
DD went to be at 7:30(2hrs earlier than usual) she had on a singlet snappy and a cotton full body suit. She was muslin wrapped, went under a doubled over top sheet and a doubled over warmish cotton blanket. Nursery temp was 20 deg. covered to her shoulders.
She woke at 11ish (most unusual) had a feed went back to bed, nursery temp was 18 deg so I added another cotton blanket one like the hospitals use which was doubled up, covered to her shoulders.
She woke at 3am (usual time) fed then went back to bed, nursery temp was 16 deg but i just made sure she was covered up to her neck this time.

She woke again at 7ish, nursery temp was and still is 15 deg.

I wondered whether she got cold through the night, we still have our summer doona on (4 blanket weight) and I am still wearing summer nighties though DH wears jumpers and track pants to bed.

I have a quality woollen blanket but think it may still be too warm for that, I have another warm cellular blanket and a few minky ones so no shortage for warmth but I wonder how do you know if they are warm enough. I felt under her blankets and it felt warm to me but she could feel the cold like her daddy. I worry about winter as the house becomes an ice box and we cannot have heaters running overnight.

    so how do you know??

To check if bub is too hot or cold i was advised to feel the back of their neck and/or back. That will give the best indicator of their body temp.

Did she feel cold when you went in? If she feels warm on her neck/back then she is.

Don;t go be the feet or hands though as they can feel cool, but the body is warm iykwim.

I was told to feel their chest, I just stick a couple of fingers underneath the top of her clothes. it should feel comfortably warm (but not too hot). if she feels cool then she probably is a bit cold. As Junglemum said dont worry if her hands/feet or head feel cool, the best indication is her body not the extremities.

Yep, I go by the body too, chest or back.

I couldn't help being envious when I read your post...it was so hot here last night, DD was sweating when I checked her & we had the fan as high as it would go
