Unhappy DS scared of the blender

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but...

I just bought a blender from Aldi. I went to use it today, turned it on and DS (8 months) screamed bloody murder the whole time it was on (about 30 seconds) and now will not let me put him down, 30 mins later! It pertrified him!

I bought it so I can make a better variety of foods for him, he's been living almost totally on mashables for the last 2 months and I need to start adding some other foods. lol
He does have finger foods occasionally but we dont have a highchair so it's a bit tricky.

What can I do? Is there anyway I can get him used to it or do I just abandon the idea altogether?

Hon, wait till your hubby comes home with a hammer drill!!
My 11month old HATES power tools, the vacum, blender, bamix, anything really loud (you should have heard the poor lil bugger when DP was drop sawing.
He has gotten better with the whirly beater, although it has now become some kind of competiton to see if he can out yell it.
I really dislike loud power equipment noise of any kind and I think that babies are the same, the difference is that we understand why the noise is there, they dont KWIM?
We just do all noisy things like that when the other person is home to take him outside/distract him.
    Poor lil tyke.....

We also have blender-phobia here. It is quite strange because he doesn't get scared with the coffee grinder or the noisy coffee machine, but when that blender goes on he has one massive freak-out!

I don't know if this is practical for you but, while he is asleep, what I do is steam / cook everything, pop it in the blender, carry the full blender into our bedroom (which is the furthest room from his bedroom), close the door behind me and do the blending using the bedroom wall plug. Not very practical and you have to make super-sure that the lid is secure, but it works.

    Good luck...I hope this helps.

DS1 was the same when I was making foods for him, I got to point I would use it when he was asleep in bed or at night while DH bathed him.

DS1 still not good with vacum, mini vac etc. Needs to be held by someone or in another room.

LMAO sambo at you taking blender to bedroom!!!!!!!!!

My eldest used to HATE the blender. Their hearing can be pretty sensitive sometimes, so maybe that's it. Can you get him to watch tv or something while you use it? Something else I do now is explain that I'm going to turn the appliance on and it's going to make a noise like this (and I do a rubbish job at making whatever noise it is), then I smile and count down and the noise is great fun.

With the blender, I'd do it a bit at a time, like pulse it so they know it's going to stop and the noise isn't so full on. It's a new thing for bub, so you might just need to do a bit at a time to get him used to it? It might create some high pitches he can hear particularly well though, so it just might be annoying at close range for him.

Otherwise, do you have earmuffs bub could wear? Can you do the blending all at once when you're partner's home and him and bub can wander out into the backyard or go for a walk while you blend?

Thanks everyone, I think I might just have to wait until DF gets home from work and do it then. I am finding it so hard to get him to sleep lately, I dont want to risk it waking him up.

Sambo - I seriously considered taking it upstairs or in the loungeroom and putting him in his cot.

Nelle - Where can I get earmuffs? I've looked in the shops but haven't been able to find any. Haven't looked online though.

The vacuum bothered him the first couple of times I used it, although nowhere near as much. When he was younger he didn't care about the bath emptying, now he hates it. I had just put that down to not having used it in a while - we were taking him in the shower with us - but maybe it's related.

If anyone else has any other suggestions I'd be most grateful
