What should a foreskin look like?

DS's is quite swollen and painful (well he won't let me touch it, so I'm assuming it is).

I plan on taking him to the doctor tomorrow but should I do anything other than keep it clean in the mean time?
I haven't much experience with boys bits.... and I asked DH but he hasn't had one in living memory so doesn't know....

My nephew had a swollen, sore penis in under his foreskin - it was infected. It was huge. Apparently this happened when he was "run down". He had a temp so they were giving him tepid baths. He ended up at the hospital having it cleaned and on antibiotics. He was approx 12 mths old at the time. Actually when i think about it - he was weeing heaps more than normal too.

There wasnt any advice given on cleaning it in the meantime cause he needed to be seen by a DR.
They were told if it happened again he would need to be circumcised - which didnt happen.

Does your little guy have a temp ?

So, yeah it shouldnt look swollen or red. Ouch !

Sorry i cant be of any help. I really hope he is better soon

There probably isn't much you can do apart from keeping it clean for now. Does it hurt him when he does a wee? When my eldest was 6 similar thing happened, whenever he would need to wee it got very swollen and was very painful for him. He ended up needed a circumcision (not saying that's going to happen for your DS) but definately take him to your doctor tomorrow. Hope everything turns out fine for your DS.

Do you think he could have a uti? The only time that DS1 has ever had a sore foreskin was when he was 2 and I kept bathing it in saline every time he had a nappy changed and retracted it the tiniest amount just so it all got saline on it (you couldn't even see the glans) and it sorted itself out, but he was otherwise well and I didn't feel that it was necessary to take him to a Dr. He wasn't pained by it though but it sounds like your little fella is, so it might be worth getting it looked at. Are there any chemists open this late over there at all?

nup, no chemists open....and it's blowing one helluva storm out there so that's out...

His wee has been quite smelly lately, but I just put that down to different foods and drink intake.
He's always a hot little guy but he hasn't been febrile for a while.
It is so swollen I can't view the glans at all and it's quite red.
Initially I thought it was just becasue he like to pull it over his shoulder IYKWIM?

    Poor little guy.

Ballooning of the foreskin when it is separating isn't uncommon, along with redness.

There's really not a lot you can do, other than just normal hygiene, and the doctor may recommend a hydrocortisone cream. It may even be a little yeast infection, in which case some canesten will fix it right up.

(If the doc recommends circumcision for a yeast infection or minor bacterial infection, ask him if he'd recommend infibulation for a case of thrush in a woman.)

If he likes to do that, it is possible that he has introduced a bit of dirt or grit that has gotten under the foreskin and is irritating it or it could be a UTI. Try to get him to drink as much as possible overnight and bathe it in saline with nappy changes and in the morning get something from the chemist or they may just recommend that you take him to the Dr. If he is in pain, give him some panadol as well

I really doubt that any doctor would recommend circumcision for an infection but in some circumstances it is necessary, believe me at the age of 6 it was the last thing I would have expected but my poor boy got to the point where he couldn't wee without it swelling up and crying each time. I just can't stress enough just to get him checked out.

Well!! it turned out waaaay worse than i could have imagined
I got all blistered around his scrotum today so I took him to the Dr - who promptly diagnosed HERPES!
    I.was.horrified!!!! I feel sooo bad.
DH nor I have ever had a cold sore which is apparently the only way he could have gotten it (if someone with one changed his nappy)...but the only people who have ever changed him are DH, me and my mum changed one nappy last weekend when she was here. I know she gets them so that's the only point of contact I can think of....
I asked them if it's the same as the STI strain...and they said yes - I nearly cried. It's not his fault he's going to have this forever
So then I went to get the script and the pharmacist was shocked it was for such a young baby....and then told me it was $80!!! finally after some phaffing around they had to get it from another pharmacy (we live in the country) and managed to get it put on a 'special script' for me so it brought it down to $35....phew.

Now if you've gotten that far - thanks.
THanks to all of you who have given support, I've had a really crappy day (on top of this) so it made me smile when I got on here. again.

Oh Hun that sure wasn't what you would have been expecting to hear! Don't feel bad about it. You know that it was a completely unfortunate reason why he got it and maybe your Mum was having one just come on if it wasn't obvious that she had one I hope he is feeling better soon and that you don't blame yourself for it or anything.
