My DD1 usually has a small bowl of cereal (1 weetbix with milk) and a piece of vegemite or peanut butter toast with a cup of milk for breakfast. Lately she's HATING eating the weetbix and will only drink the milk. It's a battle for her to eat it every morning and it's usually while I'm trying to feed DD2 as well. I'm wondering what others feed their 2 year olds for breakfast and what other options there are for cereal. I don't really like weetbix so I don't blame her and we've managed to get her eating them for 2 years so I'm happy to change now. I eat sultana bran but I'm not sure whether that would be too much sugar with all the sultanas, plus she has sultanas for morning tea.....TIA for any suggestions
Do you think she would like porridge? My lot always had it at that age and it's an awesome brekkie as it is low GI as well and keeps them full for ages. My DS2 is currently keen on Nutrigrain so he has that most mornings but when it gets colder we will go to porridge.
Thanks Trillian...I have tried porridge but she didn't like it. I don't think she likes the texture.....but when it gets cooler and I'm having it, I'll try it again. It's just so hot at the moment......
Perhaps you could try some organic cornflakes? If you get the ones sold from a health food shop that are organic they have either far less salt and sugar or none at all, and it means that you have another option for cereal without the salt and sugar worries.
I would second the porridge - but with my DD we make it a bit more attractive for her by adding some stewed pears stirred through and/or a little dab of honey. Perhaps this might be a way to encourage her to try porridge again? Perhaps you could try a little bit of honey on the weetbix to see if she might like that too?
DS likes porridge, but it took a few goes. In the end we let him put some cinnemon on it - not a huge amt (i have mine salted found it way too sweet!)
Also DH gets instand oats instead of regular porridge oats, so the texture is a lot finer.
What about the other weetbix verieties, the fruit ones etc?
We alternate between porridge (major favourite but a change is always nice), vitabrits, rice bubbles and Cheerios. Usually with blueberries/strawberries/banana/sultanas on top.
Otherwise she likes scrambled egg and toast, pikelets/pancakes (she has hers plain - yuck), cheese on toast, baked beans.
DD likes her porridge with a little drizzle of honey or with some stewed apple/pear or sliced banana.
Milkshakes are a favourite here to. I put in jalna yoghurt, milk and fruit (banana, mango, berries) and she'll have a glass of that with a piece of toast.
Some fantastic suggestions! Thank you ladies I have very little time in the mornings at the moment having to feed DD2, so cereal is quick and easy. I haven't had a chance to look at other options but they all just seem to be so high in sugar! (I learnt that when I had GD). I really appreciate your posts ladies. Thank you x
My youngest will be 2 at the end of April but for breaky it is either two slices of toast or cereal....Uncle Tobys only as they have whole grains. The box they are consuming (I have two boys) atm is 'Plus Sultanas n Bran'. The last box was another of the 'Plus' range too.
My DS2 went off weetbix too at about the same age. He liked Sultana Bran (still does) and sometimes Cheerios. He will eat them before we get up without milk and then have with milk for breakfast.
Otherwise a smoothie of some sort..this could be something you have made the night before if you struggle with time in the morning.
DS2 loves Banana's, another filling thing that can be eaten on the run.
MJ loves Muesli, she has it with Yoghurt instead of milk.
she has this or toast or both in the mornings.
She is not keen on W/bix anymore either... have tried loads of diff cereals, but this was the one that she liked the most, maybe cos i have it every morning too.
If you want to try a few, why dont you buy the variety packs so you can try a diff one each morning (although you are limited to kellogs if you do it this way) without having to buy big boxes
My DD likes some variety and has decided she likes sultana bran. However I was finding this would generally go uneaten, whereas she would finish her weetbix. She insists on eating sultana bran. So I make her "sultana bran" where I make up weetbix and scatter sultanas through it, which she's very happy with and generally finishes up! The other day I had actual sultana bran and she told me I was eating dark sultana bran and she prefers her light sultana bran!
Anyway, that was a long rambling way to say you could try sultanas in weetbix! I still give her a few sultanas for her snacks too. But I am a bit slack on trying to limit sugar (within reason) so may not be the best person to give advice!
DS usually has porridge or 3 weetbix or 2 slices of toast. I buy the Raffertys Garden fruit purees in the squeezy pouches and squirt some in with the porridge or weetbix. On weekends, we do scrambled eggs or pikelets. Some mornings he has fruit and yoghurt but I usually save that one for afternoon tea.
My 2 have weetbixs with fruit or sultanas, cornflakes or rice bubbles, sometimes they will have whatever "grown up" cereal we have in. Eggs. scrambled or boiled are a favourite here, beans, cheese on toast, piklets (you could make them the day before), porridge with a splash of maple syrup, fruit and yoghurt is another big hit- I just use tinned fruit when I am in a hurry.
Cheerios are a big favorite here, but really she'll try anything she sees her big sister eating LOL (usually a fruity-flakey-muesli type thing, whatevers on special that fortnight). Sometimes I give her the cereal dry in a cup and she's happy to crunch her way through it with a drink of milk on the side. We have never done rice bubbles, cornflakes, frootloops, cocopops or any of those highly refined & sugared ones & I recommend staying away from them for as long as you can.
Have you tried the flavored instant porridge sachets? Ok so they're not the healthiest thing but you could do worse in the cereal aisle. My DD likes to help mix it and watch it going round in the microwave.
DS adores Porrige and has done since I introduced him to it; about 7-8m old I think. It's so easy to do in the microwave too.
Otherwise, he loves shreddies and rice pops as well as weetabix.
For things other than cereal, toast is a good one. Or flapjack. I know if I did sausage, egg, beans and toast that would be requested most mornings after the porrige!
