Im booked in for this on tuesday. Im so not ready for this. My DF cant take anymore then 1day off work(which will be surgery day) I dont know how long ill have help from my mum as she is carer for my dad. I got called in for the appointment with the surgeon at short notice and have only had to wait 4weeks from then til surgery day.
Can anyone who has had their gall bladder out what to expect(good and the bad please)
Just wanted to say good luck and hope you heal quickly. No experience with gall bladder surgery but I'm sure you will not be able to lift the kids for a little bit and will have to rest a bit for the first week. I know that you have to change your diet afterwards.
I don't know your DF's work situation but if he's a permanent & not a casual worker & not self employed, he should be able to apply for carer's leave for the first few days that you leave the hospital. Get him to ask about this if he hasn't already (sometimes they don't adverstise it but it's available, kwim).
The actual surgery is pretty minor, you'll be sore & tired from the GA for a few days but you will feel better and better every day. Expect to be recuperating for a good week to 10 days though. There are lots of threads on this so I will bump them up for you.
ETA - I just found your thread from October when you were first having attacks, you poor darling that's been a long wait for surgery. How have you been getting along? I remember I was so relieved to have the surgery I didn't mind the recovery pain one bit, it's nothing compared to the agony of a gallstone attack.

You poor thing, the surgery is minor but you will be sore and tender for a couple of days (well i was), my DP only had the 1 day off work for the day i came home then i was back to being on my own with a 6mth old who couldn't decide if she wanted her mummy back or the bottle
I agree with MD it gets easier every day, if you can get help from your mum even for the 2nd or 3rd day you should be fine but everyone is different.
Ok I've been thinking about this a bit more and I didn't say in my first post - you *will* need help throughout the first week. You cannot possibly manage with your kids by yourself in that time. Either your DF takes more time off, or perhaps you can find some emergency care for the hours he's at work through your local Family Day Care - is there a friend, aunty, or someone else who can help out? Now is the time to call in favors.
good luck hon. I know MD has bumped a few old threads on this. I think the first Q is, did the surgeon say he will be doing it through key hole surgery or will he have to "open"? If it is key hole, recovery is very quick but you WILL want some assistance for a few days. The day of and first day after the surgery are usually the most uncomfortable. Of course, it is all dependent on your pain threshold and how well you recover from the surgery.
If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
