    re-entry to profession

Hi - I'm just wondering what you would do in this situation.

I'm married (2.5yrs) to a great man who has found himself in a bit of a niche career. We are in Canada at the moment - he working, me studying - and returning to his old Aus job in July.

I gave up my allied health career 8 years ago and worked in not-for-profit health/disability care for 6 years after. I've had 2.5 years off working as I complete an unrelated post-grad degree. Now, if I want to return to my career, I have to do a pretty intense 're-entry program' - would probably take 6mths, and I can't start until July.

Financially, we only need my professional salary if we were going to buy a home, which we were looking at doing in the next 18mths. But also, I think I would like to keep working (e.g. after babies).

I'm not getting any younger, and I feel really ready to start ttc now! But if I do, this may jeopardise the re-entry process. Should I wait another couple of months before ttc so that I have more opportunity to get myself ready to work in my profession after babies? Or should I take a risk?

    Love to know your thoughts

You need to weigh up what's more important - TTC right now or waiting a couple months to be sure everything's perfect in the rest of your life.

TTC might take several months. Maybe you could just DTD but not do any temping or OPKs, & then whatever happens, happens? But if your careers important to you, really - 2 months is nothing. You might not be getting any younger but you're not that old either! You might change your mind about working after bub's is born. I know I wouldn't work if we didn't need the cash.

Personally, I'd take the risk (but that's just me).

It sounds like your career is important to you, and two months really isnt that long unless there are underlying circumstances that you havent mentioned.
There again, if you wait the two months then TTC, how long would you be taking off for maternity leave, and will this again put you in a position where you need to do further training?

    I think I'd wait.

Thanks so much for responding, ladies
Heck, I do make it sound like my career's important to me, don't I? That surprises me.

Rowellan - yes, I like the 'whatever happens, happens' approach, and I think we'll take that approach when we do start ttc, whenever that is! I'm usually more of a risk-taker than DH, but then I'm forever putting my cart before my horse, IYKWIM. Thanks for your kindness re: my age It's good to put these things in some perspective - can't do that on your own!

Pandora - you're right, 2 months is not long! The aim is to be able to maintain professional eligibility to practice so I just need to pick up some part-time work between babies, maybe start a private practice, dunno. But if I leave it any later than 2013, I have to go back to Uni and start over completely!

That changes things a bit. I've done a degree so I know what it's like & I definately wouldn't want to start over. In that case, I would probably wait the 2 months. It really won't make much difference in the long run.

    Good luck either way.
