    Chocolate+Babies

I'm just curious as to what age babies can eat chocolate? What with Easter coming up alot of mothers in my MG are buying Kinder Surprise Eggs because supposedly these ones are specially for babies. Thoughts?

i dunno what the 'right' age is, but we're not getting anything for DS this year - well, nothing chocolate anyways. i personally think he's way too young - he'll be 9 months at easter. i figure he has years to enjoy chocolate & easter so no need to eat it now when he won't even remember!

I personally feel the same way - wouldn't even had thought about chocolate until I heard them talking about these eggs.

The first time we gave DD1 any type of chocolate was Easter last year. She was 2.5 yrs old then. I personally wouldn't be giving a child under the age of one any chocolate.

DD first had chocolate at 11.5mths for a birthday cake. I am thinking of getting DD a hollow small egg (you know the ones the size of a normal egg in a carton. DP and I will eat the rest!

As for the kinder egg not sure. To me, chocolate is chocolate. I thought they were just targeted to kids because they have the surprise

ETA- Knowing my DD she wont eat it anyway. For her birthday I put out on her tray some choc cake and some berries and grapes and she just ate the fruit! LOL!

It's a funny thing...I was all worried first time round so DS1 didn't get anything lollie/chocolate like for nearly two years.
DS2 came along and everthing changed as he wanted what DS1 wanted. So he probably started around 11mths.
I am glad I held of for as long as I did first time round, although it hasn't made any difference to either them.

umm the kinda surprise eggs arent made especially for kids in that they are good for their tummys etc.. its just marketed at them.

DD1 didnt get choccy until she was 1 1/2 years old and DD2 is probably gonna have some this year (she'll be 1 year old) just cause she will probably steal it off her older sister anyways.

this is the 1st year that my DS (2.5) will get an Easter egg, and only because it comes with a Thomas cup, and it's the cup that he will want, as he just doesn't look for chocolate at all (so somehow swapped at birth, cos neither of his parents could resist the chocolate).

For his 1st Easter, I bought a special egg cup, which has been put away for safe keeping, and I think I might have bought a kid's cutlery set for his 2nd Easter (can't remember), but no chocolate.

DS2 will be getting one of those small easter eggs. He has already had chocolate (thanks to a very sharing big brother ) so isn't a huge deal to me. I wouldn't bother, except that my DD has been very insistant that the easter bunny would bring him eggs.

FWIW - babies definitely don't need chocolate (I just personally don't think it is the end of the world if they do have a tiny amount, but I'm pretty laid back). As for kinder surprise being 'better' what a load of codswallop! It contains just as much sugar and other crap as any other chocolate. I think those women are trying to make themselves feel better about their decision by deluding themselves.

I was a bit mean with my kids...the first time they got chocolate is their second Easter, when they are over a year old. DD will get chocolate this Easter.

But when DS was offered it he didn't even like it! It was his 3rd Easter that he finally "got it" so to speak but even then he didn't make a pig of himself.

However, I also agree it's not the end of the world because it's not like you'd be giving them chocolate every day from now on. I figure there's plenty of time for chocolate, lollies, lemonade etc so I try to delay as long as I can and then control it as a "sometimes food" and in very small portions because I don't believe in denying these foods exist either.

It's harder to delay for the same amount of time for a second child because they see the older sibling having these treats occasionally and want one too.

Kinder Surprise aren't "meant" for babies in fact that's the last one I would give a baby because I'm sure the surprise on the inside would be a choking hazard. If you were going to be all precious about it you could give your child some organic chocolate but really, pffft, chocolate is chocolate.

DS's first Easter was last year, he was 11 months and we didn't let him have any chocolate. I warned the rellies not to buy him any and if they did that I would be eating it. Only FIL gave him an egg and I ate it!! SIL gave him tins of baby custard instead which was a good idea. He's 22 months now and I probably wont be allowing chocolate this year either from the rellies. There will be plenty of more Easters when he's older that he can eat chocolate. I think he's too little now.

I can just see all the rellies buying DD an egg!! Or maybe not, they should know by now that she won't get it. I haven't told them not to though bc I'm secretly I'm hoping they do and I can have it all to myself!! LOL.
I will probably give her a taste, like a mouthful, but that's it. Next time she tastes it will probably be next easter, lol.

LOL I'm sure you're right Misty!! I've bought DS a cute book about the Easter Bunny for this year. His swimming teacher gave him a chocolate bunny today - I've claimed it
