    Stupid Phone company!!

We have had our phone/internet with iinet for years. We pay extra to have a private number and yet we still get prank calls, calls for other people and telemarketers. We ended up buying a phone with caller ID so that we can screen calls and not answer numbers we don't recognise but it wasn't working. DH called the phone company tonight and they have said that to have caller id will cost us an extra $6 a month DH explained that we still get all these calls despite paying extra for a private number and requested a number change... and they wanted to charge us $60 to allocate us another private number!!!
Ummm hello!! I'm already paying extra for a service your not providing me!!!
Needless to say, we are going to shop around now and see if there is someone who will provide the service they offer and we are paying good money for.

Apparently you have to re-register on the "Do Not Call" list, after so long...don't know how long that time is though?

If you are on the do not call register it is valid for 3 years. If they call you ask them where they are from and then tell them you are on the do not call register. It is against the law for them to contact you if you are on the register. Charity groups are not part of this system.

If they are giving out your silent number I would talk and sent an email to someone higher up and let them know they are breaking their own rules and it is an invasion of privacy.
It looks like they need to have a serious look at their own rules and regulations.

if it is prank calls or some one asking for others there isnt alot you can do(except use caller id)
prankers can dial any number and get the right combination and it you they have called, all phone companies recycle numbers.. so if your number was someone elses then you will get their calls

i dont really think it is the phone companies "fault"

If you're on the Do Not Call register nobody, and I mean nobody, should be telemarketing you. The only exception would be if you've given out your phone number to a marketing company.

Contact the TIO (telecommunications ombusdman) and lodge a complaint - this should not be happening. At all.

This is why we want the caller ID but i refuse to pay an extra $6 a month for the privledge when there are other companies that give it out for free. I don't mind the occasional phone call for someone else because I know they recycle the number...we've had the same one for 3 years and still get AT LEAST 2 calls a day for someone else!

The only exception would be if you've given out your phone number to a marketing company.
I always give my mobile number so I can screen the calls

I'll have to check this out.
