    Reducing Carbs? WDYT?

I was discssing with DP this morning, I would like to cut out alot of the breads and pasta's from my diet. (I do plan on having carbs, but the 'normal' 130g per day)

It got me thinking though - What can I eat instead of having breads and pasta's etc? We do eat Soy linseed (oh yummo!!) and DD has white bread sometimes for school, but what about me?

I have been having soup or tuna with cruskits for lunch at work, and Im getting bored, I dont want to go back to my old eating patterns, I have to lose at least 15kg b4 Xmas.

    Suggestions?

I used to make Zucchetti Which is grated Zucchini and I'd quickly saute and use that as my pasta it was awesome. Riced cauliflower is also a great substitute for rice. Breads are hard to replace but if you can choose to have a salad instead with more protein (like tuna, egg, ham, chorizo etc) you will find you don't miss the bread at all. Goodluck!

Nae - no worries cutting those processed carbs out of your diet hun. Some ppl that like to 'eat clean' will only eat meat, vegies and nuts - no carbs other than the minute amounts found in those items (as compared to pasta's and bread's etc).
However if you only want to cut back, and not totally cut out carbs I recommend low carb wraps. They are quite thin yet strong enough to hold lots of salads for a yummy wrap at lunch time ;-)

I am an "eat cleaner"! Truly I just don't miss it AT ALL! One day a week I have a treat day & sometimes I will have a couple of slices of Burgen fruit & museli loaf on those days - but truly bread, pasta and rice I just don't even miss any more. Just do it in one foul swoop. Say: "tomorrow I will be clean". Do it. Eat freely of salads & lower carb veges (stay away from potato, sweet potato, pumpkin, peas & carrots).

Your body will feel better & so will you - the weight will fall off.

    Thanks everyone

Tomorrow I will be clean!! HAHA

See how I go (Im scared to have a carb crave and binge eat!) I'll do my best.

I cannot believe how much carbs we eat and see it as 'normal' itms?

I need to do something about my weight, and am using other methods too.

DP sort of pointed out how much I ate today (which kinda upset me but he has a point!) which was 3 slices of toast with cheesybite (mmm yummy) and a banana, then for lunch I had a pack of plain chips, 2 biscuits with a cuppa His whole point was 'Why eat like that then complain about being fat? Why waste your money on diet stuff if your not gonna stick to it?" .... He's got a point ... LOL

Well here goes - no more carbs (LOL)

    Wish me Luck!

You will have a carb craving. It takes about 2 weeks to really get that craving out of your system. So you will crave it - just drink a glass of water & chew sugar free gum or "eclipse" mints without sugar...

I had gestational diabetes with two of my pregnancies so I was on a very low carb/low GI diet.

I had to have a small carb with each meal and that included veggies. So if I had steak for dinner I could choose a carb such as corn on the cob or potato (which is really starchy and high GI) or sweet potato but could never have more than one and it had to be a small serving.

I also found that anything at all made with white flour was incredibly bad for my blood sugars. It really turned it off white flour in anything for life. It was as bad for my BSL as eating sugar straight. Shocking stuff really. Where ever there is an option, go for a lower carb alternative. The rest of the meal was made up of a protein and lots of veggies. It was really a satisfying diet and the weight fell off even though I felt like I was eating all the time. Diabetic diets are probably more low GI than low carb though

I wouldn't recommend cutting out carbs completely because they aren't entirely bad for you but I would recommend knowing your carbs well and planning to eat a small carb with each meal as it is more filling and it is good for your insulin production. It doesn't mean that you have to eat breads and pasta, you can do a carb vegetable. GI indexes are good for helping you get to know how to pick your carbs as well. The lower GI a carb is, the slower the sugars are released into your system.

We got a spaghetti squash in our vegies last week and made a "pasta" bake with it last night - it was great. See if you can get one, it is a vegetable but when cooked can act as spaghetti.
