Well until the last week Parker has been sleeping beautifully, sleeping roughly 4-5hrs at a time. However the last few days he has been staying awake most of the day, only napping for 10mins here and there. Come 3pm he is getting all cranky and crying, but won't go to sleep. I will have to cuddle him right in and pat his bum to get him to settle and it can take up to half an hour. Once I get him to sleep, he'll startle really easy and wake back up, or if I put him down he will wake. So he's not really sleeping between 8am and 6pm.
He's also gone from sleeping 5hours overnight to 2-3hourly feeds. I'm not sure if it's a growth spurt or because I changed the time I put him into his cot???
He has also been bringing up a lot of his feeds which I will be following up with the clinic on Wednesday. Wasn't really concerned previously, but he is bringing up his feed up to an hour or so after finishing. It varies between milky, lumpy, watery, phlegmy.
Natural variation hon, they're always changing on you. Sounds like the initial sleepy period may have finally worn off.
It could well be a growth spurt, or just a fussy stage. Do you have a carrier or sling? They can really help with those fussy times when baby won't sleep well. It's quite normal for them to want to be held close a lot of the time, especially when they're so young. The easiest thing is to just go with it - it will pass.
If he's bringing up a lot of his feeds maybe try to keep him upright as much as possible after feeding. Your nurse should be able to give you some idea whether it's anything to worry about or not.
I will agree it could very well be a growth spurt but also keep in mind they will have a natural sleepy period when first born, it usually heads out the window around 6wks. DS2 was waking for only 1 feed when we left the hospital & now he wakes every 2hrs or so for a feed.....sometimes he goes longer. And he only just recently figured out long day sleeps.
If he's not sleeping for long periods, it could also be reflux. Is he behaving strangely at feeds? ie arching his back, screaming etc?
My little one was a shocker at napping in the day time and it turned out the poor wee thing had silent reflux - so it was burning her when she was laying on her back!
It could also be a developmental leap. Google "wonder weeks". There is one around 8 weeks when bubs tend to get fussy and sleep poorly again. There's not much to do apart from riding it out - it will eventually pass. DD started sleeping for 5 hours at a time over night at 6 weeks. Then it all went out the window at 8 weeks and has only just settled in the last month (only because we started co-sleeping).
It may be reflux as well. DD had this so I kept her upright for at least 30 minutes after feeds and propped the head of her bassinet up with a phone book.
