Garage Sales - do people still do them?

Or does everything just go on ebay?

I go to them, whenever I see them, but I can't base the behaviour of the rest of the population on what I do (otherwise it would be a car-less, vegan, perfect world...) I have a few q's:

Has anyone had a successful one recently?
Is it worth the hard work?
    What items are good sellers?
What things are just a pain in the hole?
Do you go to them? What stuff do you like?

Note: I have read the existing threads on garage sales, and found them really helpful. I'm just looking for some different perspectives. Cheers.

I had one before I moved down here. Got a bit of attention, and was over within a couple of hours. I found that people came and the serious buyers would buy in bulk. A couple took basically half of everything I had there for about $110.

The last one I had was years ago, but I still go to them when I can, I love them! and there are heaps around still.

From a buyers persepective, I love stuff that is different & unusual, and a bargain. Not, like, plastic takeaway containers, or coathangers but then again maybe that's me - one sale I helped out at, the hangers sold. In fact lots of stuff sold that I thought was rubbish, so there you go.

Big stuff is good, books are good, big stuff to catch the eye. Lots of signs.
And I think grouping items by price is good, eg 'everything in the box 0.50c' - that kind of thing.

So the motto is, if in doubt, put it out - you never know what's going to sell.

Make sure that you price everything, advertise in lots of places (net, paper, signs), don't price stuff too expensive. Lots of people will come early I don't ever let them in before the start time though. We made about $400 at one and about $300 at the other one.

We had one late last year and made a heap of money.Mind you we had sooooo much stuff that was brand new in boxes ie wedding gifts and engagement gifts that we hadn't used in 6 years so was time to move it on and put the money towards stuff that we needed. We combined ours with MIL and her brother and sister and we all used different coloured stickers with prices on everything. We all sold the majority of the things we had and the rest got donated to a charity store down the road.

I'd say go for it and see ow you go. Its really not that difficult to organise as long as you have someone else there with you..can get a bit hectic at times especially early in the morning.

Good luck if you decide to do it

Thanks all. I think we'll do it. I've got quite a few weeks to get ready for it, and it will be a great opportunity to get rid of some stuff.
