I want to eat more fish... I am wondering, after I purchase it (we have a great fish supplier close by in the plaza), how long before I have to eat it? Can I freeze it? How long for? Is it better to purchase and consume on the same day?
I think fish is best purchased and eaten on the same day but it can be frozen. Make sure you buy and freeze fresh fish though, some fishmongers sell fish that has already been frozen (usually imported stuff) so it's probably not suitable for refreezing once you get it home. I think fish can be frozen for up to 1 month? Not sure, I usually cook fish within the week of buying it.
Withing 24 hours really, so you purchase a day in advance.
Store it on ice if possible in your fridge, on the bottom shelf, but above raw meat.
Cover it with a damp teatowel and glad wrap. Buy fresh fish from an actual fish monger - NOT the supermarket. Make sure it smells like the ocean, and has clear eyes if you buy a whole fish. Buy whole fish where possible and fillet it yourself, then you can make your own fish stock too
Buy it fresh if you plan on freezing - will last up to 3 months in your fridge-freezer, and up to 5-6 months in a chest freezer.
You can go to seafood places that sell the fish already frozen. I get around 10 fillets of fish individually wrapped soIi can just pop the bag in the freezer and pull out what I need to use. Fish needs to be well wrapped as it gets freezer burn and drys out and I usually keep it for up to 3 months. You can get delicious seafood combination, baby squid and mussels frozen from the seafood places too.
