    poopie? where are you?

ok, so our little DS is almost 5 months old, and has been exclusively breastfed (boobies and EBM in a bottle) since birth.

when he was first born, he did a poo every nappy change, and since around 4 weeks or so, he's shifted to a poo every other day. occasionally, the second poo will be after 3 days, but then he'll often catch up, but doing another poo the next day, and so still doing 2 poos in 4 days.

but he hasn't done a poo in days! it's got to be 5 days, now. maybe 4.

help! diet hasn't changed (his or mine), water intake is the same.

I've been trying to do the "cycling" with his legs ...

sometimes it seems like he's straining, and he's kind of unsettled, but I'm also thinking he might be teething ... so I don't know!

how do I get the poo out? or is he actually fine?

I know it's easier said than done, but try not to stress

It can be normal for a breastfed baby to not poo for up to 7 days.
I know it sounds strange, but its true.

thanks, tellytybbie (hey, new avatar right? super!)

but is it normal for them to be so different from their routine? I think that's what's eating me - because he's normally more regular, I'm worried something's wrong, and all the poopie is either stuck inside - or we're not feeding him enough ... !

is it normal for them to just change like that?

Hmmm, I'm not too sure. Sorry mate - I'm not very helpful
I'm flat out remembering what we did today, let alone what my babies were like at that age, LOL! :P

It all sounds pretty normal to me.. I would really only start getting worried if he is showing signs of pain.. Yes, he is unsettled atm, but do you think it's related to pain at all? Or just tired/over stimulated/ needs a burp, the general things that worry a bub.

Give it another day, if he hasn't pooped by monday, and you're still worried, then head to the docs. But in the meantime - I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless he is, iykwim.

    I hope I've helped a little, sorry if I haven't. xxoo

It's very normal for BF babies to go a long time between poos. BM acts as a natural laxative so he shouldn't get constipated. A warm bath can help and rubbing his tummy. babies do funny things, and often once you think you have them all figured out they go and change everything on you! For the moment enjoy not having to change dirty nappies..once he does go it will probably be massive!

    thanks, tellytubby and storm!

I think maybe last night I was just having a first time mother freak out ...

I will keep an eye on him, and wait the arrival of poo-city

    thanks!

    Sorry I can't help with the poo-issue

BUT I wanted to pop in and say how confused I was by this thread title & placement...we have a BB member called "poopie"...was wondering why she was getting a call out in the Children's Med Conditions section

It does change over time, as others have said. Your boy's poopies sound very normal.
Try and talk your baby into pooing when your partner is on nappy duty

haha - apologies for any confusion, over the (hopefully not missing) bb member!

well, lots more leg-cycling, a warm bath and a few more feeds later, we've had a catch up poo, and life can resume as per normal.

    yay!

    thanks for playing

FWIW when my DS didn't poo for days I was told by Nurse on Call and my MCHN unless they are unwell or seem in pain they can go for 14 days with no poo without them worrying about it! Mine went 12 then another 9 after that! Goes to show how efficiently BM is used in the body!

    14 days?!?!? wowee ...

I was so excited to see poo today - I was at my parents' place for lunch, with siblings etc, and I was all, "look! poo! he did a poo!" and they were looking at me like I was a crazy cat lady trying to get them excited about musical fleas.

lots of smilling and nodding, hoping that I would just potter off to change DS's nappy ...

    ah well!

but yes, it is a very efficient little body! all that lovely milk, and only one poo in the last few days ... maybe he's ramping up for a growth spurt! That would be lovely and exciting
