    This can't be normal!

Warning... this is a poo post so might be for some...

I can't remember the last time DD (21 mths) had a normal, solid stool.

Every poo is a horrid, squishy mess. I have to peel the liner out of the nappy and there's always some left on the nappy - the liner never catches it all. Its is runny, icky consistency that is light brown in colour. They frequently leak out of the nappy into the cover and sometimes out of the cover and into her clothes. They stink, really bad.

She'll have two of these every day. Sometimes more. We've already had two today and I'd expect one more this afternoon some time.

She has a nasty nappy rash on the top of her thighs, around where the cover sits on her legs, like where the poo has leaked out.

    This can't be normal.

Could it be diet? She basically eats what I eat - toast for brekkie, fruit for morning tea, sandwich or leftovers for lunch, some sort of snack for afternoon tea (might be more fruit, or some cheese and biccies, or yoghurt), then whatever we have for dinner. If we have meat and veg she'll always eat more of the veg than the mean... is that too much fruit and veg?

ETA - just remembered she tells me her tummy hurts sometimes and this morning she got quite distressed when she was obviously doing a poo... she told me "Poo in there" pointing at her nappy and then started crying and saying "Ow mumma ow" like something hurt. Don't know if its the nappy rash that is burning (but her actual bottom isn't too bad, its the legs that are bad...) or the actual bowel movement hurting her...

Could she be reacting to all the fruit, or maybe even dairy? Or have another mild allergy that is affecting her? I remember my little brother had to go to a dietician or something similar and go on a special diet for a while, maybe it's just something not agreeing with her?
hope you can get it sorted, I would be dreading every nappy change!

Thanks ss, yeah I do dread nappy changes. Not good.

Maybe a dietician would be a good place to start, my sister has just had my nephew seen so maybe I'll ask her where she took him.

She used to get eczema, she hasn't had it in ages... Maybe it is an allergy or something...

hmmm I would try reducing her dairy intake for a bit & seeing if that helps.

Ditto for the dairy...it's exactly the symptoms Palmer and I have. Is she very windy too, or is her tummy hard?

Another one who puts her hand up to say limit dairy. Sounds like dd's reaction if she has too much these days.

How long after she eats does she get these poos? I agree with tinkerbelle that it could be gluten intolerance. She seems to have a fair bit so maybe eliminate that and see how u go. I think a trip to the doctor would also be a good idea. Let us know how u go

I was going to suggest dairy too... maybe a visit to a a pead, in case you have to eliminate a few different things? Good luck

Agh, I was hoping no one would say gluten

My mum is coeliac... my sister and I have both been tested and while we don't have coeliac, my sister carries the gene, but my GP refused to test me for the gene because apparently lots of the population carry the gene, it doesn't mean you necessarily have or are going to develop coeliac.

Mum wants us to get both our DDs tested as she says the poos aren't normal... my niece is similar...

Seriously I do not know how I would eliminate dairy as she drinks about 6 sippy cups of milk a day! I guess I could replace with soy milk? See if that helps? What if she doesn't like it - what else could I subsitute?

My niece on DH's side has a dairy allergy... Angela I haven't noticed excessive wind but she does tell me her tummy is sore sometimes...

I think a dietician and/or paed might be in order...

yup ditto to dairy too hun
does it smell sour or sweet her poo
that sour poo could be a sign of dairy
i would definately cut out dairy and see what happens
To tell if a person is allergic or has an intollerance to a certain food- you
    1. take them off that food for 4 weeks
during this time get to know DD resting heartbeat whilst she is eating
after 4 weeks- give her a small portion of the suspect food
    take her heartrate at 10, 20 30 seconds then 1 min, 2 mins, 5 mins 10 mins
you are looking to see if it gets higher or not when she eats the suspect food
if it gets higher, then its a suspect food
i can also give you the name of a great natropath in eltham which helped my DD with her dairy malabsorbtion
she is great and will be able to help you

Try Zymil milk, it's a godsend in our house, dd is fine with it and it tastes like milk. It only comes in 1l bottles though.

Just a note that DD went through a similar stage, but she was cutting her 2 yr molars. That started about that age, cause I use to joke how she was competing with her newborn brother.. I had nappies like that for about 4 months, and they were putrid, both smell and looks.

I am not at dismissing what the PP have said, and I myself would have investigated if DD mentioned pain often, or it went on for much longer.

    hun,
We have recently been throught he same thing. Too much fruit and too much milk!

I changed to oat milk. I actually tried it and it just tastes like milk that has been sitting in a bowl of oats (LOL! that sounds strange but I had no idea what it would taste like).

Since last weeks change to oatmilk, we are back to a poo once a day and it doesnt have that retched smell or runny, sticky consistency. They are more solid.

Changing to oat milk has also reduced the amount of dairy she has (she was having way too much). I still will give her a full cream milk during the day but the rest are oat milk. She took to it really well but obviously full cream milk is a favourite so she would choose that if there was a choice.

Yes try oat milk! We drink it and L seems to like it.

L's poos always seem to be directly related to what he's eaten. We ended up taking him to get allergy testing done (mainly for his eczema though), so maybe give that a try?

I hope she isn't allergic to gluten. L is wheat intolerant (along with allergies to nuts, eggs & potatoes) and it's a real pita. Manageable, but just more effort and bloody more expensive to buy "health" foods.

Hope she feels better soon! And maybe it is something more simpler like teething?

    re: This can't be normal!

The thing is - with coeliac, it can often go hand in hand with dairy intolerance.
I think you are on the right track considering a paediatrician review - the loose bowels and stomach pains would be a good indicator that coeliac should be checked.
Sometimes you might have to push for the coeliac testing though - Its weird - I have coeliac and Ive found its not a very well known disease by a lot of doctors - I had to go through about 20 different doctors before I got correctly diagnosed (and was told I had all sorts of things like depression, somatic illness, chronic fatigue etc).. noone ever thought to check for coeliac except my wonderful current Dr whom I now continue to see!
Even though coeliac's a common illness - Ive found its not very well understood or acknowledged in the medical field.
I think it would definitely be good to get tested - for me it changed my life by changing my diet - no more pain, no more IBS, much more energy, and better concentration. It might be more expensive for me to eat now than in the past, but it is well worth it!
And if your bubs is allergic to gluten - am pretty sure Ive read it can interefere with learning so it would be much better for you to know as early as possible and change the diet if needed, and to continue to get your child monitored throughout their life if their is a family history, even if they come up negative now.
I spent my entire childhood daydreaming and looking out the classroom window and I wonder if my gluten intolerance was known about earlier and my diet changed, how much better I could have done at school.
If its gluten intolerance/coeliac - stay away from oat milk as it contains gluten - best off trying rice or almond milk, or goats milk even.
Im not sure how to post a link to another forum - but anyway, there was a discussion on soy and milk alternatives the other day in the children's medical conditions forum..
