full cream cows milk possibly causing nappy rash???
Hi,
I recently switched from formula to cows milk. My son is 9 months old. I was putting only 50mL of cows milk in his 220mL of formula per feed for 2 weeks with no adverse affects. However, over the past week, he's been really different, I'm not sure whether it is coincidence but he's very grumpy. His poos are also extremely acidic, to the point where his bum is really red and even little dots of blood coming to the surface around this anus (sorry if TMI).
I might head to the doctor tomorrow however, I am thinking the cows milk it just too much for his little system so I've gone back to formula today.
I do know it is recommended to wait until 12 months old, I know that. I read a well known baby book recently and she recommends 9 months. I just wanted to give it a try and see how he went but I really feel it's too much for his system.
Can someone tell me whether their little one had really acidic poo on full cream cows milk to start with? He's really not the same lately. Just interested in anyone else out there that may have put their little one on cows milk early and they had reactions?
Are you sure he's not teething? DD usually has acidic poos when she's teething which gives her nappy rash. She's only had non-teething related nappy rash once. We use Sudocream which works a treat. I actually put a small bit on her with each nappy change which may explain why she hasn't really had much nappy rash (besides when teething).
It could be the cows milk so I guess returning to just formula might answer that question. It sounds like a good idea to wait until he's 12 months before trying cows milk again though. DD had cows milk (a full bottle, not mixed with formula) for the first time at 12.5 months and had no problems at all.
I'd be wary of any book that advises something different to the current guidelines. Lots and lots of research goes into the guidelines. Definitely dairy is ok at 9 months, but I wouldn't be giving cows' milk until after 12 months. It is unlikely that your lo will have a problem with cows' milk when he's older if he's tolerating the formula ok, so I'd just hold off on the milk until after he's 1. Is there any reason other than the book that you want him to have milk already?
cost mainly - formula is so expensive!! he's more important than anything though so back on formula the last couple of days - he's a different kid! bottom no longer red and he's so much more happier - must have been that cow's milk!!! thanks everyone for your help and replies
