    Question Concussion and Flying

I was wondering if anyone can shed any light for me...

DH suffered a moderate concussion, he blacked out, suspected cerbral fluid loss, the report from the hospital states a suspected fracture at the base of the skull, and that they would follow up, we haven't heard anything we have contacted them and they said they would get in contact iwth us

We have kept in contact with our GP regularly and DH had another appointment today, he is still suffering nausea when driving, headaches and is taking Voltaren and Pain Relief when required.

The Dr said today that he recommened but didn't say he couldn't that DH doesn't fly on the 25th of February, which is a month after the concussion, but he didn't give a reason why, and the only things I have seen online is that it can increase the syptoms but nothing else.

We have tickets to an event, bought flights and accomodation, the accom can be cancelled right up to 6pm on the day so not concerned about that, the flights can be delayed for a later date at a fee, tickets we'll we could hope to sell them on EBAY if we had to but it would be cutting it fine doing it any later than now... DH would be shattered if we have to cancel, because it is only here one day one event only.....

But anyway I digress... does anyone have any experience with concussions/flying etc.. if so it would be HUGELY appreciated, he has another appointment on the 21st, by then it would be pretty much too late to sell tickets etc...

I imagine the pressure in his skull will increase with the cabin pressure. It could get very very very painful for him. If the pressure were too great, it could cause other complications for him.

I'd advise against it. Sorry - but the pain he is more than likely going to go through just isn't worth it. Nor is any other complication. Especially since he is still suffering after the original injury.

If you do lose money on this trip, make sure you seek reimbursement from the gym. The injury he has sustained due to their negligence should not put you out of pocket.

    Sorry.

Pressure and head injuries are not a good combination. The pressure can thin the blood and cause a bleed.

My uncle hit his head on the door of their hire car in NZ. Was complaining of headaches, they flew back home to Aus a week later and the day after the flight he collapsed and was taken to hospital and had emergency brain surgeory and was in a coma for months! Dont fly with a head injury, its nor worth the risk imho

As others have said I would not reccomened for same reasons that others have mentioned, not worth the risk. Sell tickets and keep flight credit for a holiday when yiu can enjoy it.

Sorry for taking so long to get back on, I haven't been on BB much for the past week or so.

Thankyou all so much for the information, we have plan A and plan B now, DH has alsoe been doing research and a lot of the data says that it is more of a concern in the first couple of weeks, BUT he also doesn't feel 100% comfortable unless the Dr says yes. I was able to gentle pass on snippets of information from above to him, because he is one of those guys you can't push to do things, he has to make the decision of his own accord, which he has done.

So he has the follow up appointment with the Dr next Monday, the follow up with the Neurology Department RAH won't be at least for 3-4 weeks, he is on the waiting list we received a letter stating that he will receive another letter with the appointment details and that it will be 3 weeks prior to the appointment so it won't be before we go away. So depends on what the GP says Monday, if he doesn't give him the all clear, he has already found details on going via Bus, which is 23 hours OUCH! and I will fly with the girls, my mum is coming over as well so I will at least have her help.

So we will still go, it just may be that he will go by bus, which will mean taking extra time off work, to be able to go. All of which would need to be considered when we look at compensation...
