What would you do in this situation?

About a year ago we had a heap of stuff for sale in the newspaper. One of which was a woodstove/waterheater. We had a guy come and look at it and he decided he wanted to buy it but wouldn't have the money until the next week, which we said was fine, and we arranged for him to transfer the money into our account and he was going to organise a truck and some man power to come and pick it up (it is VERY heavy!).

So we received the money ($2300) and he phoned to say he would pick the stove up in a few weeks as soon as he could organise the truck. We didn't hear from him for 6 weeks so my husband phoned him (luckily had saved his number in his phone) and he apologised and said he would organise the truck ASAP. We didn't hear from him again for a few weeks so DH phoned him again and he said the same thing. Anyway, it's been about a year now and DH no longer has his number (it was accidentally deleted!) and we haven't heard from him! We have the stove still sitting out under our veranda taking up space. We will be getting the whole area concreted in a few months so will need it gone.

What do we do? Do we re-advertise, or is that wrong? I feel bad for the guy, maybe he lost our number too! $2300 is ALOT of money for him to just throw away.

    Thanks!

    Oh my god?!
Kinda makes me wonder how much money he actually had iykwim. Few people would pay that much and never pick up the goods! I don't think there is much you can do? Could you put an advert in the paper saying someone bought this from us, was it you? And hope he sees it?
    How weird!

Would he have your address seeing as he was going to organise a truck to remove it? Do you know his name?

That's the thing though, I don't think he had alot of money because he said he had to wait until pay day to transfer the money! I know, it's so weird! I thought about putting an add in the paper looking for him. I suppose I can just run it for a few weeks so we don't get stuck with the thing for months.

He knows where we live because he came to look at the stove. Mind you, he came up with a mate and they were both a bit tipsy and drinking beer! We know his first name.. I can't recall it right now but my DH will know.

He knows where you live so has had the opportunity to drop by again if he has lost your number. Can you check the bank records and get his name from when he transferred the cash and see if you can get a contact number?

I would check with the police on your legal position before advertising it again, unless you would still be willing to reimburse him the money if he came by again.

    That's alot of money

That's a good idea. I didn't think of checking the bank transfer for a name!
It's just really annoying! It's been so long and it's not as if it's something small, it's a massive woodstove! I would personally be embarrassed having left it this long! Maybe that's what has happened.

In NZ you have to advertise in the paper that you are looking for **** who purchase **** on this date. That you would like the item collected by *** or it would be resold to cover storage costs.

Goodness, that is heaps of money. I'm inclined to think that something happened to this guy as in he may have passed away either way you've had it taking up space for 12 months! I wouldn't have even waited that long. I'd re advertise it and if he ever comes knocking for it you can tell him how long you waited.

Run an ad in the same place you originally did for him, name him, the thing he bought, your name and phone numbers.
If after a month you still haven't heard, I would sell it again.

(After 12 months your landlord can sell any possessions you left in a rental property, they are considered abandoned, so I would consider the object abandoned if he still hasn't collected it)

WOW that is odd. I'd tend to think something untoward has befallen this chap. So i would try tracking him through the bank and would also place an Advertisement like lime slice said. If that netted nothing, I would call the police or fair trade to enquire what the go is but i'm sure you'd be fine to resell it, not like you've done anything wrong if it's just a case of him being too lazy to pick it up.

geez, that is just proper odd! now i want to know what happened to him too lol...

    Update!!

After reading Hotl's suggestion of looking up his name on my bank records (duhhh, didn't think of that earlier!), I did just that, found his name and searched him on Facebook! I wasn't positive it was him so just left a message asking if he purchased a stove last year but I just got a reply. It was him and he had lost his phone so couldn't ring us either! My DH will call him tomorrow and hopefully he will come and pick up the stove ASAP.
