What pump for full time expressing?

Just wondering what is a good pump to get? It looks like I am going to have to express exclusively for DD. I brought a tommee tippee hand one whilst pregnant (which is crapola) but now that DD has some issues with her health and unable to suck effectively it looks like I'll be expressing exclusively for a long time (DD is 13days) I want an electric one and happy with a single pump but don't know a decent brand. I don't want to put out hundreds only to discover its not good enough. I'd prefer to buy then hire. Anyone have a good pump they would recommend and where to buy it from?

I had a Ameda Purely Yours which was good. It is a double which is handy once you get the hang of it especially if you get a hands free pumping bra but you can also use it as a single. It is the cheaper end of the good ones but i couldn't afford $500 for a Meleda Swing. The Purely Yours is recommended by the ABA and cost me $300.

I have found the medela swing awesome. I expressed exclusively with dd1 for about 4 months and never had a problem

To be honest, if you are looking at expressing long term I would be going for the *good stuff*. If you want to buy, a Medela freestyle would be the best option. The Ameda purely yours is good too. I don't think the medela swing will cut it for really long term expressing.
Have a look at the Australian Breastfeeding Association's online store, Mothers direct. They offer 10% discount for members - it's a significant saving on a good breastpump.

I used the swing full time no problems, I had to express full time while dd was in the scn then after every feed for 4 months.

I had the Ameda Purely yours, and while I loved it, I did burn out one motor (and killed another whenI dropped it) in 14 months

I don't know if the amount of expressing I was doing was a factor, I was doing 30 - 40 minute stints on the pump - I was told of one woman who had used it EE for 12 months & then passed it along & it was used for another 12 months... so they are a heavy duty pump. Also all Ameda parts are interchangeable. I ended up with a hire pump, not the Purely Yours but the parts I had fit it, so I didn't have to buy new bits - i like that - and they are fairly easy to come by.
So in spite of the fact that it didn't last me, if I had to do it again I'd be happy going with the Ameda.

I bought my pump (new) from eBay for about $300.

Also have you checked out the Exclusive Expressers thread - lots of stuff in there you might find hepful.

I had the medela pump in style advanced which was great but I wore out the motor under warranty twice.....I then got the medela freestyle which has a much stronger motor and is much more portable...it was defnitely worth th extra money as i made pumping so much less of a chore. I wouldn't recommend the swing for long term use as the motor will burn out too quickly IMHO.

The other option is a long term hire of a hospital grade pump such as the lactina or symphony pumps......I had to hire one short term and it was seriously the best of them all for milk production....

Whatever brand you decide, I'd encourage you to check out ebay. They often have them very cheap with women selling unwanted gifts and pumps they only used a handful of times. If you buy second hand you might get a 'better' brand or grade of pump for the same cost as a lesser one.
