Question What is this? Belly button question.

Dd3's cord stump came off pretty early and all looked fine.

I noticed yesterday when changing her nappy that her inny belly button isn't an inny anymore, but it isn't an outie either! There is a little knob looking thing sticking out the middle of it (to be honest it almost looks like I'm looking at the wrong part of her anatomy if you get my drift!)

So what is it? Is it serious?

DD has the same sort of thing, the Dr said it's normal and is looking ok as long as it's not weeping and smelly. HTH

Does it sort of look like a bit of umbilical cord? This happened to my bubba and the doc took it off with some silver nitrate.

Could be an umbilical granuloma which is a mass of healing cells. The GP can get it off with silver nitrate.

Um I dunno? It's the same colour as her flesh, if not a little pinker.... It just looks... well.... a bit obscene lol!!

Like a teeny flappy tail? I remember now my sons looked like that for ages. Then it went dark and manky like drying umbilical cord and that's when we went to the doctor.

Nah like a.. well.. like a tip of a penis.. LOL

PO5 - yeah it sort of looks like she has one poking out from between the folds of her belly button.. very weird!!!!

Hope its not to do with cutting the cord, cos I did that and I would hate to be the one to blame for her "oddity"

Cute, given that they don't get tied

And it's not from the cutting, you do that a way away from the belly button. I think it sounds like the same thing my guy had if everything looked normal before. I wouldn't do anything unless it changes.

Though I guess you could make a doctor's appointment for a months time when you can get it because it may have changed by then

My little one had this.. An umbilical granuloma.. Doc just rubbed silver nitrate on it and it dissappeared the next day Doesn't hurt them at all. (If she does have silver nitrate, be sure to put vaseline around but not on the belly button, otherwise her skin will be stained black)

That sounds just like an umbilical granuloma and not a hernia. DS had (and still has) one. The good news is that they are harmless. There are treatments that can be done early on if it is small enough (done by a GP, as eza says), but DS's one was too large and will need to be surgically removed when he is older (purely for cosmetic reasons).

Hmmm I think it's weeping - there was dried stuff around her belly button this morning and stuff on her singlet. That's bad yeah? It doesn't look infected or anything, ie, not red, puffy or any pus coming out.

Hmmm...as usual these things do tend to happen on a long weekend of public holidays, don't they?

DS's was moist when it appeared and over a period of about a week, it all kinda healed over and dried up to leave a small hard lump right in the middle of his belly button. I don't really recall finding anything on his clothes, though.

If you are concerned, perhaps try and get in to see a GP tomorrow? Otherwise, if it isn't bothering her then you can keep an eye out over the weekend and take her early next week? In the meanwhile try and fold her nappy back as much as possible to give it some air (if possible).

AE- this sounds abit like a hernia to me, my DS2 has a hernia and has to have an operation on it eventually been told they won't do it until he is almost 2yr old though
with my DS2 inbetween the 2 sides of his belly button is a light pinkish/purpleish colour that looks rounded and stretched like its going to bust sometimes when he has completely over eaten and its all shiny

I will take a pic of his belly button and post it here for you to see if your DD's looks like it so you can have an idea
