    Dislocation

Yesterday DS15 came home from school and told me he dislocated his knee and a teacher popped it back into place. I'm a bit confused because at the time it happened DS was sitting down and it happened as he stood up, I just thought a dislocation would occur during some sort of physical activity. DS said you could see something was out of place behind his knee and when it popped back in he heard a loud click and the teacher felt the bone go back into place, so it does sound like a dislocation. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please, tia.

    Regards,

Not too sure but the teacher shouldn't have put it back into place! He should have called an ambulance. That is quite neglectful on the teachers part.
There could have been nerves or muscles in the way and he could have caused serious damage!

Didn't even think of that, just thought he must have known what he was doing. There was not even an incident report filled out.

A friend of mine from schools knee would dislocated quite easily, even from walking, running or standing up from sitting. She had to tape her knee all of the time to give it some support to prevent dislocation.
I agree that the teacher shouldn't have relocated his knee, especially if this is the first time it happened? My friend used to relocate her knee but she was shown how to because it happened so frequently.

Sounds like it has slipped out a bit. A full dislocation is very painfull and only some trained should put it back. Last time mine was right out the dr's had to x ray to work out if it was the right way up.

He should get it checked out.

Yep, I will take him to our GP to have it checked. He said the pain was a 5 out of 10 and when it was put back in place the pain was gone straight away.

Wouldn't have come all the way out then that pain is worse than childbirth for me! I have had mine slip out and go back and I would be able to walk afterwards but not when it has stayed out.

If it was full dislocation the pain level would generally be a lot higher - it does sometimes pop back in by itself but may hurt for a few days afterwards. I have issues with radial patellar dislocation in my right knee as a result of an old sporting injury, the last time it happened when I simply stepped off a kerb to cross the road. Wound up in a hip to knee brace for a week and 6 months of physio to try and avoid the need for surgery.

Definitely get it checked out, the doc should possibly send him for x-ray or ultrasound to see if there is any ligament damage and may recommend strapping for sports etc.

    Hiya!

From someone who's knee used to dislocated at least twice a year since I was 11........I would have wanted the teacher to put it back in!!!! The pain when it is out is undescribable!!!!! Depending on what type of teacher he was (P.E teacher etc) he might have been trained to do it. Its not hard to do, you literally hold the ankle, support the knee and pull the leg hard and it pops back in. I used to roll over the wrong way in bed and my knee would dislocate....it took until I was 16 and they thought my legs had "finished growing" for the to give me a knee reconstruction.

    Hope he is ok xxx
