    Toilet training - the wipe!

Ds will start nursery (aka Kindy) in September. I'm not sure if they'll take so kindly to having to wipe ds bum after a number two.... Should he need to go. How on earth do I teach him.

He gets Defeated quite quickly if he can't do something well straight away, ending in anger and frustration.

Please help.... I'm embarrassed just thinking about this!

Can you ask the nursery what their policy is and any tips for teaching him?

Can you use the flushable wipes? Dd likes to try and wipe herself but it ends in toilet paper stuck everywhere. The flushable wipes seem to be a bit better (although I put them in the bin because I worry about our old pipes here).

I think just praise him as he tries but be there to supervise and you may be surprised at his efforts.

They shouldn't mind, but will want you to be teaching him how to do it too. Alot of children his age can't wipe their bottom well. Just let them know you're in the process of teaching him, and he still needs help.

At home, encourage him to do it everytime. Don't do it for him until he tries. Enocourage him to within an inch of your life! I would probably advixe not to use flushable wipes because he will need to use toilet paper at preschool, and gettinghim used to using toilet paper after using wipes might be another issue. Maybe you could try a sticker chart or something to get started?

If the nursery staff arent willing to help him then you need to find him a new nursery. I worked in childcare, its part of the job!

Ahhh I have a stealth-non-wiper…it's a pain hey! Mine also can get quite upset when he stuffs up - the thing that's worked best for us is to say 'you go first, and then I will help you finish', and the plan is to end up helping less and less. It's definitely a work in progress though - the issue ours seems to have is reaching, so I guess it's just a matter of helping him to find a position where it's easy for him to reach his backside! We'll get there - for now, I just check his bottom when he gets home, or at the very least at night - maybe things aren't super runny here, but a bit of a stink and skid mark seems to be the worst case scenario here…

Maybe…keep coaching him towards a 'kinder kids need to wipe themselves' goal, but maybe also pop a pack of flushable wipes in his bag for the teacher if they detect an overly offensive smell following him around? I'd definitely talk to the teacher though - obviously your child will not be the only one that is a slack wiper!! See if they have any ideas or strategies?

    Thanks everyone for replying

Nelle - I did what you suggested - we ask him to try first, and we finish.... It works!

It's getting him to have a go which is hard coz he hates not being able to do things right the first time.... And gets so frustrated.

But he tried and was proud of his effort..... So I just continue to encourage!
