Our mattress is awful. Actually we have two, so we're using the best one and the other is in the spare room, but they're both over 10 years old and just horrible to sleep on. We knew it was bad when we went stayed at a hotel twice, and both time the bed was so wonderful we didn't bother with any hanky panky, we just had the best sleep ever!
So now we're getting a good tax refund, thanks to finally paying off my HELP debt And we're going to get a new mattress! I have no idea about brands, what's good and what's not, so I'm feeling a little overwhelmed by all the choices. Is a pillowtop worth it? It's the springs in our current mattresses that are causing issues, so the pillow bit on top would mean we couldn't feel them right? Or should we go all out and get latex or something, with no springs?
We have a pocketed inner-spring with pillowtop - love it! So comfortable as it's the right mix of firm for back support (I have a bad back) and soft for comfort. The springs being in pockets stops me feeling DH's every little wriggle. I found most of the latex ones too soft for my back.
But my recommendation - take your time, go with your OH and test out a few different sorts. Bed shops don't mind you laying on the beds, they have covers at the bottom to prevent shoe marks etc. Try to lay in the position in which you most frequently fall asleep/wake up in and on the side of the bed that you normally sleep on - as close to how you'd naturally sleep as possible.
Hehe, I love that you guys love your beds so much! I could sleep on the couch and be as comfortable as I am in bed right now.
Tashy, are the Tempur ones spring or latex?
We tried a few when my Mum & Dad were buying a new one, but got a bit overwhelmed by all the choices. I've been thinking latex may be the way to go, but I like how your spring one has pockets CK - that'd be lots better than a regular spring one I'm guessing.
Just a question, if you guys don't mind, if you have a latex one was it more expensive than a spring one? There's a place in Adelaide called Makin' Mattresses, and they make them there so there's no middle man, it's supposed to be cheaper. But theirs seem to be really fancy latex ones that cost more than others we've looked at, which makes me unsure about it all!
I'd go the latex over one with springs. I don't know heaps about it, but springs can act to amplify electromagnetic radiation which can interfere with good sleep. A latex mattress is definitely on my wishlist. Apparently cheaper latex mattresses have cheap foam fillers in them and poor quality Chinese latex in them. Might be worth doing a bit more research but the locally made ones might be your best bet
I've got a latex one and its beautiful but they are very expensive. Only downside to latex is that it generates a ton of heat, and if either you or your OH are "hot" sleepers, then you might find it too hot. My mum had to get rid of theirs because she just couldn't deal with the heat.
We just spent all day yesterday 10-5 bed shopping, it was hell!!! The amount of choice out there is crazy. We tried every bed in every store, got the low down on all the pros and cons. We opted for a medium 5 zoned pocket coil bed with a latex, wool and cashmere comfort layer in a king. We tried Tempur which was nice once you lie on it for a bit but because it's like a memory foam I think it would take a bit to get used to & being such a big investment I wasn't willing to risk I may not get used to it. Tempur reacts to your body heat so it can feel a little hard to start with and softens with your body heat at 26 degrees. If it's a cold night you'll have to wait a few mins for it to soften which I didn't like because if you roll over in the night you need to give it a min to soften. It's also hot because it molds to your body so not great for hot sleepers. It feels lovely when you lie on it for a few mins but I was too scared to buy it as it's about $3000+ and was afraid I just couldn't get used to it plus I like instant comfort appeal. They have 3 zone and 5 zone pocket coil, 5 zone is better but 3 zone is still good. Pocket coil is better than the flat coils because they mold to your body shape so are very supportive. I would say choose 1 or 2 stores and try out some beds but don't go into every store you'll end up really confused. Forty winks have a good range, so do snooze. Good luck. I say go pocket coil with a latex comfort layer not a latex bed they can be cheaply made with foam underneath just a cpl inches of latex.
That's what I'm afraid of Babyluv, trying a million beds and being more confused than ever! I think we might research a little online first and see what's in our price range and then go limit ourselves to trying only those ones.
Reckon we'll try a mix of latex and the pocket coil ones. Thanks everyone
Mum bought a memory foam one years ago, she has back problems, so does dad, but they need different thing. Both of them swear by it, it's weird to start with but bloody comfy... When we get a new mattress I'm going to get one of these.
i have a memory foam pillow but it is like a brick when the weather gets cold. we don't have heating in the bedrooms. has anyone had same problem with any memory type mattresses? anyone else have one of these beds and cold bedrooms (down to 0 deg C)?
Also, when we stay at a motel and they have a good bed, i have taken the sheet back and taken a photo of the mattress label (for when i am rich and famous and can afford a really good bed).
I have a memory foam pillow and I love it, don't have any probs with it but it's not as hard as the tempur. It seems to react alot quicker than tempur.
We just got a new one and it was seriously bloody time, when we actually took the old mattress off, the springs were poking through... that could have been interesting for the next ninety day mattress flip =/
Anyway we went early june and got about $500 off the price of a latex one. I loved it more in store but i think it was worn in a bit more... its a bit too soft at the moment but we have had it less that a week.
Im loving having a good mattress, it is so much better for my back, and the bump!
