How soon after baby did you go onto contraception and what did you choose?

After a little pregnancy scare (!) I think it's time I thought more seriously about contraception. I may have had my first AF already (bit confused over that still lol!), how soon after baby did you go on contraception, and what did you choose? I'm thinking Mirena atm.

after DD1 we didnt use protection, after AF returned i knew when i was fertile (AF returned at 9 months)
with DD2 i had the mirena put in when she was 14 months old, again once AF returned (6 months) i knew cycle and we used the occasional condom

I don't react well to hormone contraception, so for us we used a combination of condoms, family planning (once my cycle was back) and withdrawal. So condoms up to O and withdrawal after - with a few days grace for just in case. But my cycle is fairly obvious even without temping.

We're just going condoms - I did ask the doctor if we could chat about any other contraceptives, but he just prescribed me the pill, no discussion I'm hopeless at remembering to take them, that's why I wanted to talk about something a bit less remember-y

We used condoms between our last pregnancies and will keep using them until we either decide to have another baby or go for permanent contraception. I'm not using a hormonal contraceptive again.

The thing with my stupid cycle is, it's so unpredictable...anywhere from 15-86 days, even with condoms, I don't know if I could handle the stress of not knowing if I'm utd or when my period will come. I like the idea of Mirena because it's 5 years.

The mini pill is a tough one and I found it did nasty things to my hormones. You have to take it at the same time every day, within like an hour or something, which I struggled with.

We're just watching my cycle and using condoms. DH doesn't like them though so once we are sure we're done with babies (under some negotiation ATM!!!) DH will be getting the snip snip.

ETA - did they ask you anything at your 6wk check?? Mirena is really good once you've had a baby apparently. My sister's got it and she really likes it.

Just condoms here, never using the pill again.

We use a combination of withdrawal, condoms (they make me bleed and then I am out of action for a week afterwards) and then family planning. DD is just over 4months now and fully BF. There are no immediate plans for a surgical method which is our only option for contreception. We just want to make sure the decision to not have more is more concrete before DH has a vasectomy. I would love another, DH is not wanting anymore only because of finances but his the one that wont have the vasectomy just yet. I'm pushing him to do it so I can move on from the idea I may have another in me.

I was on the mini pill within a few weeks of DD2's birth, and waaaaaay before DH got a chance to touch me again!! I fell pregnant with DD2 just under 3 months after DD1 was born, before I got a period and while fully breastfeeding so there was no way I was going to take the chance again.

If we're lucky enough to get a third baby, DH will be off to get a vasectomy. He just doesn't know it yet

OP yeah, we went through all the options and Mirena seems to be the best option for me atm (would never do the pill again, ugh!). I'm in two minds about messing with my natural cycle though. On one hand it's totally frustrating and stressful, on the other hand it's natural and won't be adding unwanted hormones to my system.

After we had DD, we used condoms, family planning and withdrawal, though it didn't work so well, lol...DS1 was concieved when DD was 6mo and we had planned on at least a 2yr gap! After DS1, it was condoms, same for now, religiously. Regardless of where I am in my cycle. Admittedly, it's not that often we manage to DTD these days (1-2 times a week if that), so it's not too exxy at the moment. I am waiting for DH to bite the bullet and get a vasectomy. We agreed that after we had finished with babymaking, he would be the one responsible for the contraception. After more tahn 10yrs on hormonal contraceptions, over 4yrs of either carrying, birthing or feeding babies, it's time to give my body a rest.

Maybe you should just wait and see what happens ( in relation to your period) as you "think" you had AF but maybeyou justwere still bleeding post partum... I bled after DS for 6 weeks non stop then it stopped for a week or so and then I bled again for about a week.. it wasnt AF because It didnt come back .......

I got my first real AF 9 month PP and then we were careful, using only withdrawal , until we decided to try for baby number 2 , which was when DS was 18 months old.... and then it still took 3 months to fall pregnant.. a m/c and now we are nearly there and he is nearly 3

Id say see what your body does. After all any hormones are going to mess with you, your bf and possible future fertility by messing with your cycle

I have a Mirena. I love it but funnily enough my second one has been totally different to my first. With my first I got a bleed when it was put in and then no period until it was out. With this one I still get a period every month but it is quite light and goes for longer than my old periods used to.
I really like the not having to remember a pill and not having to use a condom (DH is so annoying about condoms) aspect of it.

I'm considering mirina because I can't have an estrogen pill, but to be honest I like condoms so why mess with my hormones, except to reduce my menstrual cycle and make life a bit easier.

We used nothing at the start, which is why after being with DP only 2 months I found out I was pregnant. Whoops! But, we were drinking ALOT and being silly.

I started on the mini-pill after DD was born, as I was expressing for her.
My supply dried up after she got home from hospital at nearly 7 weeks.
So, I then went onto the Pill (mind you, we were still using condoms for the majority of this time)
But that made me put on 5 kilos in 2 months and made me sooo psycho.

So, its just condoms for us. Latex free, due to my allergy.
