What would you do RE: carpet

Just want to get some advice.

    My carpets are disgusting.
DH has a steam cleaner- but of course I'm always last in line and I haven't had them done in 3 years :-(
I nag and nag and nag- but looking at them today- I'm not sure if they are going to come up nice at all after a steam clean.
So my options are- keep nagging DH till he does it- could be in for the long haul, and see if they come up clean OR
Replace the carpet, even though I have a young child and hope to have another one in the future, and the carpet will probably get dirty again.

    What would you do?

I wouldn't buy new carpet. I think it would be a waste if you're planningn on more kids. Can you clean them? Or how about hiring someone to do it, rather than spending the money to buy new carpet (and despite your DH being able to do it!) just pay the bit of $$ and have them done professionally.

We recently faced a similar issue, old carpet that never steam cleaned nicely but have a 8 month old and 2 dogs.

We didn't want to spend a fortune on good carpet while bub is still growing up and while we renovate so we bought cheap carpet and underlay, good enough to last 3-5 years.

Look at fowles auctions they have a carpet showroom on the princess highway off springvale rd and have cheap through to expensive carpet

Our carpet at our previous house was a horrible carpet that held onto stains and it showed up every tiny little bit of dirt. I thought it would be almost impossible to clean the grot from 4 kids when we left but amazingly we found a brilliant carpet cleaner who got every single little spot out of the carpets and it looked better than it did when we first moved in there. I say definitely look at getting someone in to clean it for you. I don't recommend the ones that dry clean though as I found they only took out the top layer of stains and left the rest underneath. Someone who does steam cleaning is the way to go - or just bug your DH until he finally does it

I found Chem Dry good a few years ago. We had a lot of rain though at the time. He did clean deep down. I think they vary a lot.

I was looking at my 'cream' colored carpet this morning and it's disgusting, there were stains from the old owners but now with 2 kids and the cat, we have black/grey blotches right through it, slight stains where the kids have spilt drinks (which they are not meant to have in there).
I'd say for now hun maybe just get him to do the steam cleaning OR if your going to get new carpet, go for a dark color that wont show up the mess you will get with kids.

I wont be replacing mine until the kids move out i think but really need to try something to get some of this crap out, worst part is i sport clean and yet we still have stains that get missed

I'd get yours cleaned first and then decide. If your DH needs some convincing, maybe get some quotes for new carpet/flooring and then he might be more keen to wash your current floors. Or just get some ads/quotes from others to come clean it.

We have stupid white nasty carpet. It generally gets cleaned once a year and it comes up schmick, it just gets dirty again quickly. Hoping to replace it all one day, but til then carpet cleaning doesn't cost that much anyway.

ZF, i have someone good around here if you want to get your steamcleaned.

Definitely try steam cleaning first. It's amazing just how much they can get out. I had cream carpet in one of my rentals (everywhere except the wet areas - great for a rental ) which was a nightmare. I had a puppy, baby sat our young nephew often and was always entertaining friend's. It was filthy! I had it professionally cleaned for each inspection and it came up like new each time

If you end up going for new carpet at some stage, I'd highly recommend spending a bit more and getting one of the stain resistant brands and in a darker colour. We had a gorgeous one in our last house in a warm brown. It was divine and certainly easy to look after.

If he doesn't come to the party so to speak I have seriously found something that will change your life

It's been advertised on TV lately.... Vanish Preen Deep Clean Powerpowder!! It's on special at Woolies for $9.95 I think and it seriously is amazing!!!! It's a moist powder and you sprinkle it over the carpet and sweep it in with a soft broom and leave it until it dries. Mine took about 40mins to be completely dry and then you just vacuum it off! We have a really light carpet in our lounge room which was disgusting but after this powder it looks unreal!!

    Get on it
