My 10 week old has had nappy rash almost continuously since she was born. I work hard and get it cleared up, then BAM 24 hours later it's back like it never left.
I've been using the anti yeast cream from the chemist like it's going out of fashion.
I want to use cloth nappies and we had a bit of a good run with moo goo and bum geniuses for 2 days, but tonight she suddenly had blistering, hot, swollen skin and was screaming in pain.
I'm not sure if she's allergic to something, but I keep having to go back to disposables and heavy duty cream.
There may be a connection to the bamboo motherease Sandys, and tonight she was wearing a green kids which I usually stuff with bamboo but were stuffed with microfibre tonight. But I'm wondering if she might be allergic to bamboo.
Poor little tacker! I smother zinc & Caster oil cream on DS since he was very young and that is lovely. His bottom is a tiny bit red most evenings and by the morning it totally cleared up. When he was newborn we had no clue and had been drying his bottom with a tissue for a couple of days and of course it irritated him it took weeks to clear up properly and we felt terrible! the zinc/caster oil cream was the best for us and loads of nappy free time which did result in lots of wee on us... and the odd poop.... but was worth it to know that the air and sun was helping him. basically he was so little that he would just lay on us anyway so I had terry flats on my belly and under him ready for accidents. Oh I almost forgot! microfleece liners are great for keeping bums dry, do you use those? I also think disposables are a good idea for a week, and go for the good ones like huggies, we were also changing ds every few hours during the night and didn't leave him wet during the day... yeah we changed LOTS of nappies like 20 in a 24hr period. That may be extreme but we really wanted it to clear up.
I have heard some babies are better in sposies and some better in cloth.
I was using sposies and changed to cloth, when he was about 6 weeks old.
I find giving him a bath every day in a tub, and always putting cream on seems to help. I also use cloth wipes. A few times when the small rash he had was getting worse I put the smallest drop of tea tree oil in the bath. I also put it in with soap and the cloth wipes in a bucket of water before wringing them out.
I guess I will have to try eliminating everything and starting over.
I couldn't even bath her tonight she was in so much pain and didn't want anything touching her, I had to sit holding her legs up blowing cool air on her bum. She eventually settled.
I'll try eucalyptus oil on her cloth wipes, I usually just use water. What does castor oil do?
I hate disposables and I'm feeling bummed that my super economical cloth nappy plan (first used with my son) isn't working out. Disposables are so expensive!
Bum genius and green kids have microfleece linings, don't they? Or is that something else. Is that what happy heinys are lined with?
I'm not sure what liners are in those ones, I used Baby behinds PUL covers with bamboo foldups (some bamboo fleece and others bamboo terry) then I got microfleece from an online store and cut it down into liners. I have heard that some babies can be irritated by the fleece though so maybe that is the problem if it's the fabric against the bottom? The caster oil is soothing an the zinc is healing. Most supermarkets and pharmacies sell it in the baby isle. It's also what the pead recommended as the best thing for nappy rash. The caster oil makes the zinc spread much easier too, it's much nicer that the sudeo (sp?) cream IMO. I'm not too sure about tea tree and eucalyptus though? They are both really harsh and drying on the skin. tea tree is great for fungal things but if you are already using a fungal cream and it didn't clear up the rash than it must not be a fungal problem so why risk drying out the skin even more with tea tree or eucalyptus? I wash all the cloth nappies with teatree and water in the rinse cycle but would never put it on ds's skin. That's just me though. something soothing like lavender and a bit of oil in the bath water would be better. good luck with it.
How awful for her.
Lavender, eucalyptus and tea tree are all equal in their antiviral/antifungal/antibacterial proprties. i have used tea tree and lavender in bath and on wipes with success with yuck NR but in your little one's case kuraiza, I might be taking her to the GP for a swab. Just so you know there's nothing sinister going on.
She could very well be allergic to the bamboo, but if they're in the actual nappy pockets then I'd say not so likely.
I'm pretty sure the inners of bumGs and greenkids are suede cloth and I do know that lots of kids have allergies to that stuff. Mrs Nerd Burger is a good one to PM about that.
eta should have refreshed and checked the MNB hadn't posted before me.
MNB what happened with suede cloth? Was it nappy rash? I saw on the general thread your dd has rash problems in cloth, too but is 3 years old. Has she always had this trouble?
nappy rash is awful.
I would say, ditch the cloths for afew days, cornflour on the area helps, so does fresh air and change nappys alot. If you can use someold towels just under baby and let baby be nappy free for afew housr that would really help.
Hey hun, if she's had a fungal infection you will need to disinfect the nappies as well. The fungus gets into the material (even if you can't see it) and continues to reinfect. You could try soaking in vinegar or detol and then leaving out in the sunshine for a day to kill it off.
I found when using cloth nappies, that even after one wee, my poor DD1 used to flare up anyway. Her poor little bum was so inflamed and sore she couldn't be held or patted. I also found out she had a reaction to the zinc in the creams, so had to find one that didn't have zinc in it. I ended up having to use disposables and bepanthen. It took about 4 days but her little bum was clear. I couldn't use zinc based creams on any of my other kids either. I haven't tried any of them in cloth after the first disaster.
I have used huggies but not only are they really exxie, that the cheaper brands do a better job and also don't have tabs that cut into their little legs. I am now using Aldi or Babylove's.
Hope this helps you out some
