MCN's differences between boys and girls - getting lots of leaks

So I used MCN's for DD who is now basically toilet trained (she won't use toilets outside the house but otherwise ok) so am now trying to use on my DS who is 8 weeks old and 6kg but have had a leak on everyone I have tried. My stash is mainly greenkids and BumGenius, with a few ebay cheapies thrown in. The leaks mainly seem to be around the waistline, but have had leaks from round legs too. Could my nappies just be too old e.g. leg elastic is too worn from my toddler? I don't want to buy more cloth if can help it but don't want to use sposies either. Melbourne weather is not kind for drying washing currently so all the leaks are a pain. Should I do something different for a boy (I already make sure he is "dressed down") e.g. in the bumgenius if I fold over the insert should the folded bit go at front or back (I assume front as that is wetest part in a sposie). All ideas appreciated.

Not sure what you use to stuff your nappies. I found with my boys that they leaked simply because the wee wasn't getting absorbed fast enough. Boys wee seems to go onto the nappy with more force than girls, ITMS. I made sure I had a layer of microfibre on top of any bamboo etc as it absorbs faster and that helped.
The folded section should be at the front, you have that right.
I have used some nappies with virtually no elastic left as a last resort and had no leaks. Wouldn't think the elastic is your problem.

how would you recommend do the strip wash? The method I have used before is to use a bit of cheap dishwasher liquid and hot wash and rinse till no bubbles - seemed to work ok - but am not sure the nappies smelled as fresh as they could of.

That's how I do it too, but with 2-3 rinses and teatree/lavender/eucalyptus in the final rinse. Then hang them outside.

Have to agree with berrme their wee force is something else. DS can often wee straight out the leg of well fitting nappies....very frustrating. I used to fold the BGs at the front and then fold the NB insert in half and position that right at the front. I never used only a single insert with him.
Lots of bamboo boosting under the microfibre helped too.

    Thanks everyone
Once we have some more sunshine will give strip washing another go then, and also boost them up a bit more, I think DD was not much of a wee'er so never had quite same issues. you have given me hope that will be able to use my stash if persevere.

How much does your DS weigh? At 8 weeks DD was still a fair bit below the minimum weight for BGs (and probably Greenkids also), she is a little one though. If your boy is on the small side he might just be a bit small for them. Either that or the elastic may have stretched a bit over your DDs legs. I think on the internet somewhere there are instructions for replacing the leg elastic on BGs? I think it was originally done for the old (V2.0??) ones that had dud elastic, but I can't see why the same instructions wouldn't be useful in this instance?

DS is 6kg already so definitely big enough, and we used ok with DD from about 5kg - will check the site about the leg elastic. We have had one GK with no leak today but it wasn't on long because he did a big poo (the cloth seems to contain these better than the sposies actually)

I can't comment on those nappies, I have used bamboo BBH which I have had no probs with. Are you making sure his penis is pointing down in the nappy? If it is sticking up (towards the waistband) that would cause a problem. Good luck, extra, extra washing sucks!

I agree, cloth are way better for containing the poo explosions!
