My 17 month old DD is sick, high temps, miserable, hardly eating, sleeping lots, clingy. We have just been watching her, keeping fluids up (breastmilk, water), cooling her down. Her temp got to 39*C yesterday so we gave her nurofen, this brought temp down. Box says it can be given every 6 - 8 hours. She had 3 doses over 24 hours then i gave her more this morning (10am). She was drinking water but didn't want to get out of bed . i was starting to get worried so i got her up (despite protests) and was making her some breakfast while holding her. She then did big vomits and i think vomitted all the nurofen up. this was about 10 mins after she had the nurofen.
We had a shower together and she cooled down more (to the touch). She was a bit brighter and ate 1/2 piece of toast. Since then she just sleeps, cries upon waking and might drink. She has just had small breastfeed and asleep again on my lap.
Her temp (to touch) is increasing again. Haven't checked with thermometer again yet. Would you give nurofen again (assuming that she had vomitted last lot) or wait til 6 hours is up?
I have a bag packed and still considering taking her up to local hospital, but each time i decide i will she picks up a little bit.
Sounds like what my little boy is going through, except he's not vomiting at the moment. Can you give her a dose of panadol instead and wait a few hours to give more nurofen?
I'm considering taking my DS to hospital.. but I saw my GP yesterday and he put him on some antibiotics.. so hoping they will kick in soon.
Have you got panadol hun, if not i can run a bottle over, it's safe to alternate b/w nurofen & panadol and then you could give her the nurofen again at the 6hr mark.
If your worried then i'd take her to hosp and get her checked, it's sooo not like her to be that lethargic even when sick right?
Theres no harm in getting her checked, if you need some panadol i can race it over so you don't need to wait for DH to finish work etc.
I have had the experience that temp can return even after giving Nurofen. I remember asking a doctor about this and he said the body is over powering the Nurofen because the temperature is needed to fight the sickness.
Temperatures are very rarely dangerous and are after all the body's way of fighting infection. (I think panadol, nurofen etc are great though to help everyone get a rest and some sleep and pain relief when necessary - but not necessary just for a temp).
Hope all is well hun, your not online and haven't replied to my SMS so i hope your both just getting some rest and your not stuck waiting at the hosp or something.
Let me know how your going when you get a chance, if you need ANYTHING just let me know.
Hope my adopted 3rd daughter is well
Back home again! Got her checked out and just one of the viruses that is going around. So, keep fluids up and just ride it out.
we only give medicine when temps are getting to 39 deg or more, i subscribe to darwinian medicine, wheree many symptoms are helping the body fight infection but i a also wary of letting her temp get too high. especially when her behaviour is so out of character.
to answer your original question, no it is not safe to give more medicine after they have vomited as you have no way of know how much (if any) is actually in the system and risk overdosing on the medication.
Glad things are on the improve though. Poor wee thing.
