I picked up an old wooden bassinet from an antique shop for $10. I'm trying to fix it up for Spock. it's been stained and varnished before, so I'm currently sanding it. (this is the first time I have ever done anything like this)
When I went to the hardware store I didn't know if the wood had been stained (change the colour) or just varnished (like a clear finishing coat). And because of that I didn't know if I had to/wanted to stain it or not - will depend on what colour the wood was. So she said Sand it, mainly because if there is any varnish on it, if i do stain it, it wont stick to the varnish.
ok, so I started sanding it, and the wood has obviously been stained, now that i have had a really good look at it. so here is my question. Do I have to sand every little bit of staining off (like a thick layer over the wood). OR if i just sand it all over to get rid of the top coat (the varnish) would that be enough??
has anyone does this before??
I have put a couple of photos in my album of it, its hard to see, but the light bits are the wood and the darker bits the staining. (I'm not sure how to link to my album in here... but you can access it through my profile.)
any tips or help would be great!! this is the first time I'm doing this and I really want it to be pretty and nice for Spock!!
You need to sand it back so that it is all uniform. If there is stain left your finish probably won't be even.
Your final product will only be as good as your preparation so it is worth taking the time to sand it properly.
ETA - make sure you wear a mask when you're sanding. They put some crazy chemicals in paints and varnishes and you don't want to breathe them in with a baby on board.
