    Dog - Licking 1 Spot.

Our beautiful girl Cassie (border collie x kelpie) seems to always be licking 1 spot on her back, off to the side of her tail (roughly).
I have had a look and there is nothing there, no cut, no fleas, no difference in skin color etc but i was wondering if there is a reason she is doing it?

You can see a patch on her fur where she licks it, you can see where her saliva has dried.

Is there something i should be looking at or is this normal doggy behavior?

It's actually quite annolying , it's the most dusgusting sound to hear her doing it

I don't know much about dogs, but my sister's dog was doing something similar (chewing on just one spot on his leg) and the vet said he was stressed. They spent some extra time with him and he went and spent the day with 'the grandparents' while they were at work and he stopped doing it. He's a pretty active dog and although their yard was a decent size and he was taken out for frequent runs, he just needed to spend some more time with someone. They had also recently painted the house which the vet said dogs really don't like and could have set him off.

The girls and I are home everyday with plenty of outside time, I wonder if there is anything we've changed, she's been doing it for ages I just never remember to come in and ask.
    Hmmmm

Sent from my iPhone, more than likely while I should be doing something else!

It sounds like a habit from being anxious.

I take it she's had flea treatment?

Our vet said the sweat glands in their bum can get inflamed. Next time you bath him get gloves and a big paper towel and massage around his anus. You will get some pretty gross stuff out but it fixed our dog - no more chewing.

Does the area feel hot. It could be be a hot spot. If it is you can dab some metho on it. Have you changed shampoo or anything recently too?

Hadn't felt any difference in temp and we haven't changed shampoo or anything.
We do live on a property and they are forever getting into mud patches and things, we just hose them down, let them dry off and give them a proper bath once eveyr couple of months, over summer once every month as it's warmer and helps cool them down.
As soon as we have a nice warm day i might empty out the old bathtub and put it out the front where i can chain them up and give her a good scrub.

Then if nothing environmental has changed that she could be having a reaction to either I would say that it is a habit she has formed. You could try putting some bitter lime or some other bad tasting solution on the spot and that might deter her.

not much more to add, but our dog has terrible allergies and is constantly licking, so i can sympathize on the disgusting sound! drives me batty! Hopefully you can find what it is that is causing her to lick.

It is likely that either she needs her anal glands emptied (and checked for infection) or she has a hot spot.

My dog used to chew and lick the base of his tail - I got fed up with it too. The vet said it was a mild eczema type thing and gave me tablets to ease it off. Tablets worked and he stopped and didn't start again once they ran out.

I hope you can figure it out.
