I really love the look of a few cabin beds that I have seen, but I'm wondering what age your child would be before you let them sleep in one? They are generally not as high as a bunk bed and they all have safety rails. DS is moving into a new room soon so we are getting him a new bed, but as much as I love the cabin beds I think he's a bit too young at 2 years 8 months. He's never fallen out of his toddler bed, but even if he did it's only about 30cm from the ground...
Is a tricky one - we have an IKEA bunk bed and it says should be 9! before on top bunk - it has rails so in my opinion this is very old. I think once you get over about 60-70cm above the ground it doesn't matter if is 1m or 1.5m off the ground is still probably not great to fall out of. I went into a bunk bed with rails at about 3-4 I think (and always had one from then on). We are going to play it by ear with CJ as to when she goes in top bunk but I am thinking similar age 3-4. From age 7 I never had rails, and never fell out until I was 18 years old!!! (I wasn't drunk, just slept the other way round to watch football and obviously rolled the wrong way) - I put my teeth through my lip on the fall but otherwise was unharmed. I remember my brother falling out too and he didn't even wake up!
I think falling out when sleeping is less of a problem then falling when trying to get in and out or playing in my opinion.
My older two boys went into a top bunk aged 2 (literally turned two that month) and 3. We didn't want the 3yo in the top bunk but a tiny room meant there was no space for two beds otherwise. The 2yo didn't want to sleep without his brother so climbed up when we put them to bed and they slept in the same top bunk for almost a year. It really depends on the child though, and had it not happened like that I would have probably said no to a top bunk or cabin bed until nearer 4, more for the risk of falling whilst climbing the ladder into it that anything else.
I know that there is a safety concerns for children under 9 sleeping in bunk beds (with side rails) as they can get stuck between the bed and rail which can (potentially) cause suffocation.
DD1 got a cabin bed for her second birthday. She loves it and the only worry that I ever had was her hitting her head on the solid border around her when she was tossing around at night half asleep. I just used a few pillows for a while but now we have no issues. We don't have a ladder for her to climb up or down so she calls out to us when she wants to get down.
Hmmm, so it's sounding like a possibility to put DS into one within the next 6 months or so. I think I would probably pop an extra mattress on the floor beside the bed for quite some time though just in case he falls out, but otherwise see how he went. He's a little daredevil when it comes to climbing and is quite proficient at climbing up onto his play equipment from all sides and angles and so far hasn't had a fall (touch wood!).
Interesting, we have the IKEA Kura and I was thinking about 5ish for DS, he's never fallen out of bed so far but he currently has a bed rail, the height of the top of the sides on the similar to the bed rail (about 30cm I guess?)
Our DD is in one and has been for a month, so she was 2 years 3 months. It got given to us and gievn the size of our bedrooms is great for storage and space saving. We do have a mattress on the floor though, and will keep it there for some time!
I was a twin and slept on the top bunk since before I was 3 and never fell out!
