i ran over a snake and i am freaking out!!!!

i just ran over a snake in my car on the way home. i couldnt help it it was too late before i realised, it made two thumping sounds. when i got home i got my partner to drive his other car to the location to see if it was on the road and he couldnt find it!! now i am scared that it is somehow up in my car somewhere. he looked under the bonnet and also looked under the car and near the front wheels and he couldnt see any snake or any sign of snake guts etc. i am really scared to get back in the car in case it is somewhere in the engine or somewhere and it might come out while i am driving! is there anything i can do? or am i over reacting!

If you ran over it, chances it is dead. Something probably picked it up off the road for lunch. I wouldnt worry

^^ yeah that, though there is a chance it managed to crawl off before your partner went back.

It's either dead or has slithered away. It would be pretty much impossible for a snake to climb up into your car while the car is moving. Lots of animals that are badly hurt from cars will still move away as far as they can make it.

yes that is what logic told me but i just keep thinking about all those stories you hear about snakes getting turned around in the wheel and flip up into the car engine only to find themselves transported home and then get themselves into the car interior! i cant imagine anything worse than be driving the car and seeing a snake slithering around inside at your feet or coming up the bonnet or something. Gosh, i hope it is dead in the gutter or side bush or something!

My mum had a red belly in her car. We think it was there a week before it was discovered. One thing u could do if you were really worried is gas the car ( put hose from exhaust into car). Be careful if doing this. If you find a snake we were told call the fire brigade as wildlife places will say 'open the doors it will leave when ready'

No they think it got in one day even it was parked (about 15 years ago when dad stopped to help a lady with ants in her car he left a door open). That was a Monday. Friday mum putting little brother in his car seat and turned around to see it sliding across the dash board.

chances are the poor thing didn't make it. Most likely as others said it became someone's meal or it tried to make it back into the bush.

Where do you live? I have never heard one story like that at all! lol

Onelittleprincess - probably not really what she needed to hear.

I'm sure it is dead and you should relax. Have hubby look over the car again then you might have some more reassurance. x

I understand she probably didn't want to hear. Was just explains that I know it happens and giving an idea to check and how to get rid just in case and also a contact.

I would imagine that the stories are urban legends, as it doesn't sound very likely. WAY more likely that the snake just slithered away or was picked up and eaten by some animal.

Also - I have found from experience that sometimes when something that you're scared of actually happens, the reality is nowhere near as scary as your imagination. I used to have an old car that I parked outside. One day I found a huntsman spider on the head rest. DH killed it before I had the chance to really register what had happened, but after that, I would always check the car before getting in to make sure that there were no spiders in it. One day I must have been in a hurry and not checked because as I was driving a saucer-sized spider crawled along the windscreen on the inside. I was terrified, but managed to keep driving until I got home, carefully got out of the car, and then got someone else to kill the spider. Anyway, the moral of the story is that I was always so scared of exactly this thing happening, and when it did, I just dealt with it. So, as everyone said, it is highly unlikely that there is a snake anywhere in your car. You are more likely to get kidnapped and impregnated by aliens than a snake crawling into your car, but on the off-chance, I am sure that survival instinct will kick in and you will do what has to be done. I don't know that much about snakes, but I hear that the vast majority are actually harmless (like spiders, they look freaky as hell, but most are not poisonous). If you're still unsure, maybe have someone else come in the car with you.

When I've run them over I've noticed that if they aren't immediately dead, they take off pretty quickly and I assume they would die not long afterwards. I've heard those urban myths too and they do freak you out!

i got in the car today and drove. i thought i am almost 30years old i should just grow up, suck it up and get in the dang car! LOL seriously though i totally understimated my snake phobia. it was quite literally something that i struggled with. i had to force myself. if only the snake didnt disappear it would have been less scary for me! thanks everyone.
